Berries can be one of the most costly fruits. Whether you buy berries fresh, frozen, or dried, you will probably be putting out for the delicious, nutritious little pieces of fruit. So how do you purchase berries? Do you buy fresh in season and frozen out of season? Do you invest in dried blueberries and get more for your money with a longer shel-life?
What's the cheapest way you have found to get this nutritional powerhouse fruit into your diet?

If there is a good sale & they are in season we will buy fresh. Otherwise we buy alot of frozen fruit especially strawberries. My kids love them frozen and it's a cheaper treat in summer as I can get nearly double the amt for frozen as I could for fresh for the same price.
I planted some raspberries from my Aunts house who got them from my grandmother many yrs ago. I'm hoping they survive the winter this time around. As I'd like to have a lil bit of small berry patch in the yard for my kids. They eat fruit so fast it's hard to keep enough in the house nor afford it! *LOL*

You are right about frozen being cheaper. I also have berry plants trying to make it in my yard, but the eating of berries far out does the growing of them in my small patch. And I don't even have a child at home any more. But hey! The dog eats the low to the ground berries.

I would say probably fresh in season produce is the best way to go. I did get fresh blueberries really cheap this year at Walmart. I purchased several containers and then I brought them home and canned them. They make excellent blueberry pies! I also lucked up on fresh peaches as well! These I canned also. If you are looking for a longer shelf life you should try canning or dehydrating them. I have dehydrated strawberries before, never blueberries. I still have some of the strawberries and they are good for putting in pancakes or making muffins with. When growing up my mama froze quite a bit of produce but I have opted for canning or dehydrating to save room in our freezers.

I've never canned blueberries, and our WalMart has only a few aisles of food, but not fresh fruit or veggies. I have a great dehydrator, and next year, I plan to pick up fresh berries when they are in season and dehydrate some of my own. I like them on cold cereal.

I usually by them fresh in season. Then, I will often freeze them myself, by flash freezing them and then bagging them in serving size bags. I love fresh berries. If I don't have any frozen ones and fresh are not available I will by frozen ones. I never buy dried berries though. I like juicy berries, lol.
