Are you Allergic to your Cat? |
| |
| I am allergic to my cats, but I have decided they are worth the aggrevation and I take the medication and keep them anyways. Is anyone else allergic to their pets and have chosen to keep them? Got any tips for reducing the effects of the allergens for all of us sufferers? | | | | | |

| | I have extremely bad allergies. I take medication which keeps them in check, but doesn't make them totally go away. | | | |

| | They told me I could take shots or treat the symptoms. And that I could take the shots and it might not do anything, so I have decided just to take the meds. Glad shots worked for you though. | | | |

| | you see, my allergist had a different method of arranging the shots most allergiests have a set dose they think is what everyone needs, mine used your reaction to gage you antigen level and then each dose was taylored just for you... wish he hadn't retired | | | |

| | That sounds like a good allergist. Most doctors think the same thing works for everyone even though our genetics are totally different and are hormones are definitely not the same. One of the reasons we have such a hard time treating women is that all the studies for drugs used to be men only studys since women's hormones were thought to mess with the results. The result of that is that more women die of things we should be able to treat. | | | |

| | yeahhh, too bad he retired and that's why "women's problems" like Lupus and Fibro have low priority to the male researchers | | | |

| | I'm allergic to cats, but I always have them around. The two indoor cats have free run of my house, except for my bedroom. I don't allow them in the bedroom at all. In the rest of the house, I use air cleaners with ionizers to keep the dander down as much as possible. I have a cat cleaning mitt I use on them a couple of times a week to keep the surface dander at bay. I, also, vacuum at least once per week and use a hepa filter bag. | | | | | | |

| | Those are good suggestions. I might look into getting one of those mitts. | | | |

| | My asthma returned last month with a vengeance and the saddest part of having this ailment back is not being able to pet my cats. I love the feel of their fur and they like having their bellies scratched too. Now, since my allergy will flare up because of their fur, I am content with them brushing against my ankles. And they are content when I use my feet to touch their bellies. LOL. | | | | | | |

| | ah, how sad. I would be very sad if I couldn't pet my kitties. Hopefully your asthma will get better soon and you can pet your kitties. | | | |

| | I'm not allergic, but my son in law is terribly allergic. He can't breathe with a cat in the home. I had to give my cat up because of it, since I live with him and my daughter. It was a sad day for me... but a good day for my cat. She has a wonderful mommy, and plenty of kitty friends to play with. | | | | | | |

| | My father and sister are allergic which is why the kitties can't go visiting. Sorry you had to give your kitty up, glad you found her a good home. | | | |

| | I used to be allergic to cats. Like, really allergic to the point where I'd get physically sick. But in recent years my family's gotten a few cats, and we've had neighboring cats come around our place. I've come to grow used to the allergens that cats seemed to have bring. All in all, I really like cats, allergic or not. | | | | | | |

| | I think I am getting used to my cats too. But I am sure the vacuuming I do and the air filter that I have helps. | | | |

| | I am allergic to cats, which is why I don't have any. I won't own a pet that I am allergic to because it only makes me sick. I have kids that I have to take care of so I can't stay medicated or sick all of the time. And I can't afford to get prescriptions for allergies. I do love cats, but know that I can't have any. | | | | | | |

| | Thats sad. I am sorry. I would be medicated anyways for my seasonal and mold allergies so its not like adding the cat allergies affects me anymore than the others. Most of the allergy meds out there are non-drowsy now and over the counter. Zytec is the one I use, but I can certainly understand not having a pet because of the allergy situation. My parents had outdoor pets only because my father and sister are highly allergic to pet dander. I am only mildly allergic and its worth it to me to have them and take the medication. The benefit to me emotionally is worth taking the pills every day. Perhaps one day your situation will change and you can have a cat or perhaps an outdoor pet. | | | |
