What Is One Of Your Favorite Comfort Foods When You Are..... |
|
.......Sick? Feeling like do-do ca-ca poo-poo? For about a week now I just haven't been feeling too keen...uh, to put it mildly. I've been having one of my bouts of bronchitis again...not too severe but still making me feel lousy. My energy level has been zip, can't think, having serious brain fog. As soon as I started feeling lousy and getting that twinge of bronchitis I started taking a bit more of that herb Echinacea, more Vit-C and dosing myself with garlic pills since garlic is a natural antibiotic. I still haven't gone to my docs since I have to practically be at death's door before going to one....LOL....also have that same attitude my great-grandmother had who was a nurse and thought all docs as idiots, never took anything stronger than aspirin in her life, was into natural remedies and lived to be 98
But I have noticed something when I'm sick....now yes, I'm a good cook, love cooking and can make a lot of great homemade soups...and do while I'm sick...but what do I long for and eat a lot of while sick? My favorite comfort food..what is it you ask? Good old Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup---I could eat this by the gallon ...Yes, it's a "processed" canned food, loaded with salt, salt, salt, and yes it has MSG (mono sodium glutamate)..but I love it...this is definitely my comfort food when I'm sick...perhaps memories of my childhood as that's what I would have when I was sick as a kid.
So when you're sick...what is YOUR comfort food? Even if it's something that may not exactly be the healthiest for you like a processed food rather than a homemade one. Do you turn to good old Campbell's soup too? Doesn't have to be the Chicken Noodle kind either, but do you?
Just what is it about that Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup anyway? Mmmm...mmm...good...mmmm..mmmm...good

4. Anomalie (1066) | 10 months ago | On the very rare occasions I've has a bad cold, I always fancy Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup. In fact it's the only tinned soup I will eat.
I also tend to want really stodgy carbohydrates. Big yeasty buttered buns or date scones or big jam doughnuts.
This is a time when we should be eating lots of fruit and healthy food, but I never fancy anything like that. I always want the things that aren't good for me.

pyewacket (11509) | 10 months ago | Nuts now I'm hungry for those buttered buns and jam doughnuts..LOL...yup, I realize I should eat more fruits too, but if I want a sweet snacks will grab something chocolatey..

6. Aussies2007 (2916) | 10 months ago | I don't use food for comfort. I only eat when I am really hungry.
When I am sick... I lose my appetite and eat very little. I will look for very light food... easy to digest... like soup.
My comfort zone is a cigarette and a glass of wine. Wine does wonder in curing all sort of problems... because it relax you.
But if I have the flu with a bad headhache... No cigarettes and no wine. So much for comfort. Luckily... since I live far away from the city and its nasty germs... I don't get the flu anymore. lol

8. moondancer (2920) | 10 months ago | Soups are always a good thing. It helps to make the stuff loosen up in you. Also I have had my husband or grandchildren to pound on my upper back to help loosen up the congestion in my lungs. I get that really badly. I will get worse if I'm not real careful. I have bad breathing probleming so I get sick easily. I just try to catch it as soon as I get sick and use that stuff the teacher invented to lessen the time and severerity of the sickness. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

| |
|
|
pyewacket (11509) | 10 months ago | What stuff did the teacher invent? Some kind of special remedy?
| |
|
|
moondancer (2920) | 10 months ago | I believe it's called Air-Borne as he deals with all of the children in classes coming in with colds and being sick. He is a biology teacher and came up with this to use to stop how severe a cold or flu is and it drops the time to half of the time being sick. It does work the key is to use it at the first onset of knowing you are getting sick. I have a couple of different one sin the cabinet.
| |
|
|
moondancer (2920) | 10 months ago | pye since you are so sick if you have or can get your hands on a vicks vaporizer, mister ...the one you put medicine in like vicks vaporizer medicine in. Fix up a tent over your bed and out that under it on a table next to your bed. Stay there letting that break up the congestion and the medicine go into your body. this is what my husband and son do for me when I am sick like that. It really does help. Also take your medicines(herbs) that you have been, don't stop them as it may shock your body to abruptly stop something that will help you.
| |
|
|
pyewacket (11509) | 10 months ago | I sometimes just do a "makeshift" vaporizer just by boiling hot water, pour the water into a bowl, then add the vicks vaporub stuff..or for a quick fix just open up the jar and inhale the rub...LOL
| |
|
|
moondancer (2920) | 10 months ago | rub it on your chest and upper back (where your lungs are) and take your meds and cover up real good. Keeping covered after putting on the vicks. That is a good things for a quick fix, what you do. But the tent will help you sleep better during the night.

9. Irishfrndly65 (7251) | 10 months ago | I never garnered an appreciation for canned soups. They all taste the same to me. But I surely do appreciate a good homemade soup. I love stews the best, thick and rich and hearty. YUM!
| |
| |

|
pyewacket (11509) | 10 months ago | Wow I have to admit I haven't made a good hearty stew in ages...next time I do some grocery shopping I'll have to get the fixings for it.

10. AngryKittyMSV (1857) | 10 months ago | I make my own chicken soup, it takes about 8 hours to cook. If you weren't so far away I'd bring you some! Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup is great because it is all wrapped up with our childhood memories I think, plus that saltiness and the consistency of those noodles just hits the spot when you feel down!
My favorite food is Pizza, any kind of pizza even pizza bagels (too bad I can't get good pizza OR good bagels here! LOL). No mater how sick I am, even if it's tummy sick, I can eat pizza and it always makes me feel better.
But the only time I REALLY reach or the comfort foods is when my soul is sick, you know, when I am feeling depressed. Then it's a vicious cycle of salty, sweet, starchy repeat until I feel better. Things have been bad here lately, so I've been eating icecream, chips, triscuits, cake, cookies, and twizzlers. I normally don't eat much junk food, but the last week or so I'm living off the stuff. I hope things get better because I can't afford to buy new clothes if I get any fatter.
