It is always easy to train certain parts of the body. For example, training the chest, more bench press will do the trick. To get bigger biceps, more weights lifting. To get six pack abs, more sit-ups. And to train the legs, and the calves, more running. But certain part of the body, like the lower back muscles, how do you target train those muscles?

Of course there are exercises for lower backs, as long as it's part of our body ^_^ But the exercises are too few, because it's the hardest part to train in the whole body.. HAve u ever heard about 'christmas tree', when ple are talking about back muscles? It's actually the lower back and the entire back.. When it's well trained and well toned, one can actually see those small small muscles spreading at the side with the spine as the core.. It's very nice, and yet very difficult to train.. haha =D If i'm not wrong, most lower back exercises can be only done with a barbell.. As to what exercise to do, it's hard to explain in words without any pictures to show too.. hehe ^_^ PLus, training of lower back is dangerous as the risk of getting slipped disc is high..

so, what would you recommend to strengthened the back muscles? One where it is not too harmful to the body such that slip disc is not part of the equation?

For the entire back muscle, u can try doing push ups, as well as chin ups.. hehe ^_^ BUt chin ups must be done using over draft method and with wide grip, forming a v shape with your body ^_^ Overtime, u will develop very nice muscles, especially what they called 'eyes' just below your shoulder blade ^_^ As for using of gym equipments, u can do the seated row or using the lat pulldown machine, to help develop the back.. However, push ups and chin ups are for building of overall muscle strength.. For toning purpose, use those machines or free weights ^_^
