United States
February 4, 2009 4:52pm CST
As everyone of my friends know that I am working in the gift shop as a cashier as my volunteer job and it's my first time handling US coins...I know I tried to study this when I got here but it's different when I am in the actual situation and having some clients waiting! LOL! I move so slow in my first 2 days! LOL! I was so confuse but I am getting better now! LOL! Do you learn fast when it comes to money? (for those who traveled to other Countries)

It took me a while to get use to the US coins and terms for them. When I got my retail job I had lots of practice and now am use to which coin is which. Just take your time and say it out loud as you're counting. That helps me lol

When i went to Japan it took a while to learn the currency. i even give people too much at some point and i really had to stop and think about how much to spend. i spent 2 weeks in Japan and after a while I had gotten used to it to the point of now I could even easily use it.

That also happened to me when i was assigned a cashier job at my part time work when i was still working abroad... it even came to the point that i had to practice before the restaurant opens because i was so slow at giving the change... and some customers looked at me as if i was an idiot... Good thing i was able to get the hang of it after a few days...

Hello checapricorn, I don't know about myself as I never had a chance to stay in another country that long like you do. But for sure, I always take things for granted. Lets say if I have someone there to help me, I will ask that person to help me out. So if I ever had an experience like yours, I will definitely ask my husband's help. Until I have no choice left, I will learn and I think I am quite a fast learner in fact!

Hi gr8life, I know it's not hard to learn since they have only 4 coins but it took me several months to absorb it..I mean I had some practice at home but when I was in the situation like I am working with people and they are there waiting for their change, I was moving way too slow! hahhahahah! I improve this time! LOL! Thanks and enjoy!

Hi Che, I've been to quite a few countries earlier where my visit was short so I didn't had to deal much with the coins in those countries. I visit my children in the US and stay there for a month at least, and there I've to deal with the currency.I get confused especially with the remuneration of cents. Sometimes, during commuting in a bus, I take few coins in my hands and have to show the driver and ask him to pick the appropriate coin. I also tend to move slow like you!!

Hi Che, hahaha... I was confused of that too. One time when I go to the dollar store I usually use the coins for that matter. I am not so familiar with the quarters, 1 cent, 5 cents.. haahah then I just give all my coins to the cashier and she will be the one to count and give it back to me the rest that she doesn't need.. that was one year ago. But now I mastered already the cents..Lol. It's because every time we buy something here, there are cents like, $5.32 cents etc. My regular visit to the dollar store had helped me mastered identifying the US coins. hahaha..

Hi Bebs, I agree once you will use it in actual, it helps us very much. Unlike when we will only practice it at home! I hope also to master this you know! LOL! Before, I always wish to have quarters only as their coin! hahahaha! But, there are 4 coins only so, I know I will be able to learn this fully! ENjoy!

Hey checapricorn! No way! When I went to Canada I was so confused! I couldn't figure out the coins at all! So I can understand it being very difficult for you to learn the different coins! It isn't such an easy thing to do! People should understand that and be patient with you while you are learning! Don't worry you will pick it up after doing it for awhile! Just take your time!

Thankfully (within Europe,US,and UK,at least!) The coins are Decimal,so switching between them Isn't as difficult as it used to be before the Euro switchover..I have some pre decimal UK and European coins..there were 240 pennies in the pre-decimal British pound! it's Much easier now..You just need to get to recognise the various coins, after that,it's quite straightforward..

I've always been fascinated by monies. The imprints, the history, the stories depicted...intriguing. I am familiar with Canadian money, and was always excited to get my hands on lunies and tunies...oh that Monopoly money! The colors are so pretty... although it's worth a little less... :)

When I visited Sweden the coins were very easy to use, since they do not have many different ones, so that was nice... Though when I went to Spain it was very hard for me to get used to the coins, and I never really did... They have too many numerical values for coins and they do not look very different from each other like in Sweden and the US, the lack difference just makes it really hard. Good luck in learning the coins, it should not take you too long to get used to it, our coins are pretty easy hehe.

I have not been to another country but I have seen foreign currency. I do not understand it either. My daughter was in the military and she sent me some coins and bills from Italy. To this day I do not know how much I have, I know it isn't much. So I am saying that I would get confused to an yes I would be slow about learning. You have more courage and confidence than I would have, I never would have done a job like that and not knowing the currency well.

LOL. When it comes to money, I will try to learn the coins and bills fast as an eagle. I always find it amusing that every other foreign currency that I get my hands on for the first time look like play money. Or something you could use in Monopoly. I hope you are enjoying your stint at the gift shop, checapricorn.

When I first moved to the US I had a real hard time, because they have names for it, in my country we just called by the number like 10 cents it's 10 cents!! But write it down on a piece of paper so you don't get confused. 1 cent = penny 5 cents = nickel 10 cents = dime 25 cents = quarter 50 = half dollar ( I don't think they make the 50 cents ones anymore...)
