Daughter's Read at Home Book: Helen Keller - Interesting insights. |
| |
| My daughter (5) brought home a book from school for us to read. It was a short biography of Helen Keller. Apparently, Helen Keller was described as a person of great energy and enthusiasm. Initially, this seemed confusing to me.. for she must have had many challenges in her life. Then, I thought about it. Helen Keller lived in a world where she couldn't see negative facial expressions or hear insults, slights, condescension, or other negative attitudes. To be blind and deaf would be a hardship, of course, but what about that second part? To no longer see or hear negativity? On some level, that must be liberating, don't you think? | | | | | |

| | What a great way to look at life. I think Hellen Keller overcame MANY obstacles through her life but wasn't directly challenged by the negativity that most of us deal with on a daily basis. I wouldn't venture to say that nobody was mean to her but for the most part she probably never knew about most of it. I think its great that your 5 year old is learning about such a strong person so early. I also think that too many people forget to live their lives. Hellen was full of energy and enthusiasm because she could see past her blindness and hear past her deafness. She didn't let them slow her down at all. It wasn't a death sentence.....just a speed bump. I think more people should live their lives to the fullest and deal with the speedbumps thrown at them and keep going. | | | | | | |

| | A wonderful response, I think. Yes, I'm sure she had some people who were unpleasant.. but in order to talk to her they had to approach and make physical contact. Meanwhile, she was going to schools where people would have been impressed by her ability to learn and thrive despite her blindness and deafness. I'm sure she was a bright girl.. she certainly seems to have done well at school once she got beyond her initial difficulties. It is remarkable the number of important and famous people she met in her life. I think it is really a very positive story to start off the day. Oh, and "Tinkerbell" my daughter likes the Peter Pan and that new Fairy Movie that came out starring Tinkerbell. (It is a good story if you haven't seen it. Tink is unhappy with being a Tinker fairy but learns to find joy in her skills instead of wishing she had skills other fairies possess.) Take care and have a good day. | | | |

| | Hopefully we can all go through life overcoming obstacles and inspiring others around us. Tell your daughter to keep reading, it can take her anywhere and teach her almost anything! I will have to look for that movie. Thanks for the tip! | | | |

| | I would not like to lose my eyesight or hearing. LIfe would be a lot difficult although one can still lead a decent living but with some more obstacles that in my opinion I prefer to do without. helen keller's story is really inspiring to lot of us here who feel unmotivated in life. | | | | | | |

| | What an interesting way to look at it. I hadn't thought of it like that but she must have been very lucky not to be able to experience some of the hatred in this world. Thank you for making me think of it like this. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS** | | | | | | |

| | I am sure she came across some negative people. But I am sure with all of the activity she was involved in she didn't give it any thought. Liberating, sure. Not to be conscious of negativity unless she is touching it. She made her mark on the world without being able to see or hear. She is forever remembered. How many of us can say the same? | | | | | | |
