Do you use a GPS system in your car? However useful is it?  email this discussion to a friend?

Currently, i'm driving without a GPS system, but that is because i have just passed my driving test and got my license. I often find myself lost EVEN if its only Singapore! Which is just a small dot in the globe! Getting lost, and trying to find my way back to my destination often means additional petrol required and additional $ is spent..
I was wondering whether if it would be worthwhile to get a GPS system and to save $ in the long run...
Starting this discussion to discuss whether if GPS system really helps? How useful can it be?

No, we do not have a GPS system in our car. Now many taxis are having GPS system, but in private cars it is very rare. It is quite useful in taxis from passengers' safety point of view.

I guess GPS system is either for me, the extreme road idiot, or to the taxi's drivers then... Oh, and those who travel long distance via car, i suppose..

I'm pretty familiar with where I go; I don't usually travel too far out of where I need to be for work & school, so getting lost isn't usually a problem. My sister (who drives a bit more than me) just bought a GPS system for her car.

It's pretty useful! She bought one of the most expensive ones, though (which I would never do) so it has plenty of features that are really useful. I enjoy the feature that it has to "look up" where certain "attractions" are - you can look up restaurant locations, shopping malls, sports bars, dance clubs, and so on - there's a HUGE sattelite database with tons of local places. The only problem was that sometimes, places would show up on the database that NO LONGER EXIST. So, in other words, sometimes the information can be inaccurate and outdated (not always the case though, maybe just with my sis's GPS).

It's also a little dangerous to use GPS's alone. While some offer a voice that "talks to you" and tells you where to go - people often like to look at the pictures/maps on the GPS - which is hard to do when you're driving! If you decide to start using one, I would suggest having another person drive with you, so THEY can watch the GPS while you drive (instead of trying to multi-task and do both).

Long story short, I think it's useful if you need it - although not a necessity. I personally would rather print out directions from "Mapquest.com" than pay $200 to buy a GPS that I'll only use once a week or less, but that's just my opinion.
