Time seems to pass so slowly for children and younger people and it seems to pass so swiftly when you get older. Have you ever thought about why that is?

Yes I find that time passes so quickly once you past the age of 20. I have no idea why. Maybe when we are younger , we want to get older so we can drive, drink and live on our own and get a job. But when we are older, we want to hold on to our youth.

Yes, I think that must be the reason. I remember it took forever for a week to pass and now I wonder what happened to the week.

I agree there I am always asking myself where the day went so my life must be moving fast.

Well, I tend to think of it as when you are a Child growing up, you have no real responsibilities and worries, and then the older you get, you have a lot of things on your mind you need to get done, and there is never enough hrs. in the day, so the days and months Fly by.

Hi caribe. Being as we are the same age I know what you mean. Like, where did my life go? I am just now getting the hang of it and there is so little time left. It also seems to go fast when you're busy, and it crawls when you're bored. Which is, of course, a catch 22 situation. I think 'seems' is the key word here! LOL

I agree, HerShe. I, too, am just getting the hang of it and there isn't a lot of time left to do it right. I think when we are really young we don't think too much about our mortality. That is why we did crazy things that could get us killed. Now I think before I decide to do something that could put my life in danger, like driving at a high rate of speed, for example. Now I think more of the possible consequences, but I am getting off of the subject.

probably bcoz of our job, we just keep doing the same routines over and over until we dont care much about the time... hmm nice topic you have..

Thank you for the compliment. That is an interesting thought. If everything is the same routine you would think time would slow down because the routine is boring.

Have you ever wondered why it passes so quickly when you are older. I think it is partly because we feel we have so much to do before we finish this life.

How funny! A bunch of us were just talking about this the other day. When you're a kid and you get the summer off for vacation, it seems soooooo endless; yet now that we're adults, it zips by so fast you wonder where the summer went to. I think it's because as we are adults, we have so many responsibilities. First we work at a job, then we come home and do some more work while we take care of our house and our families. There's always so much to do that we never have time to really accomplish it all. So by keeping busy all of our waking hours, it just seems to pass by so quickly...just like when you're at work having a slow day and it seems like it's never going to get to quitting time and the clock seems to tick even more slowly.

As an adult I think about things like that more. It is interesting that other people are talking about the same things. Time definitely flies for me. Thank you for your kind response.

I think it has a lot to do with perceptions. As children we are generally impatient because often children are told 'when you are a teenager you can do that' or 'when we go to visit ....'. As we get older we realise that we have to work from Monday to Friday (or whatever) and so going to work adds an extra dimention to life and fills much of the day, because not only are there 8 hours/day working plus travelling, socialising with friends etc. When we are doing things that we enjoy, the time seems to slip away. Sad but true. If only we could go back a little and realise there were many things we could have done as children to pass the time. :)

So true. When you are very young and you really don't have much of a concept of time, it seems so very slow.

It's like being on a road trip, you're antsy to get there so the time goes slowly, but on the way back you know what's out there, so it goes faster getting back. Life is a highway, lol.

Yes, I have thought about it. That is probably why one of my all time biggest pet peeves is wasting time. Time goes by so quickly, that I don't like to waste too much of it. I try to pick and choose the things I do or how I spend my time accordingly. Great question.

Time is gold. Time just pass not so quick and not so slow. It is just that time really passed and people are just wasting it. Time for those who are standby are so slow but for those who are working, time is so fast. Anyways, time is just moving moderately.

When you are five, a year is one fifth of your life, when you are thirty, that same year is one thirtieth of your life. Thats why time passes so quickly when you are older

I have read though this discussion and I have given this considerable thought over the years. I think something that people in this discussion have not considered is this. As we age our minds have been exposed to a greater total volume of time. This I believe has the effect of changing the way we perceive time. When you are say five you don't have any concept of what twenty years is like but when you are sixty you have experienced a greater volume of time. Your minds ability to quantify or comprehend a different amount of time changes how we perceive time. I hope I am making some sense here but what it basically boils down to is this. When we are older we have experienced a greater amount of time so it seems like less then when we are young and have not experienced the greater amount of time. Hope this is a helpful way of looking at the world around us and how we perceive it.

I think it is because we do not have a concept or value of time when we are younger. We are doing what is expected of us. As we get older we have to use our time wisely and we have much more free rein of the time allowed. Therefore, we may waste a lot of precious time and once it is lost we can not regain it. I noticed once my son was grown and gone time started speeding up for me. When he was in high school it felt like time stood still. I never thought he and I would actually live through those years. LOL. Now that it is just me and my dog, time is racing away. He has been gone for 2 years and it seems like only 1 month. So, now I know time is flying by for me too.!

Yes, when you are small and you depend on others, days and hours are much ,longer. When you are older, It is like an old computer, so much information to process, so little time left for joy.
