Modern science "unwraps" a mummy

I think they are looking at the "regularness" of the bone structure of the skeleton.

Now, pebbles in Egypt's case was in part because they wanted the body to look as normal as possible so they inserted the stones in the eye scockets to keep them from being sunken.

There are specialists who can reconstruct the face on the basis of the shape of the skull. They work in criminal forensics as well as archaeology. Actually, mostly in forensics I would have thought, as the police have a reason for wanting to know what a murder victim looked like when there is nothing but bare bones left but it's not really important for archaeologists unless they are preparing for an exhibition of some kind.

absolutely, there are so many that were "unwrapped" by early treasure hunters that I can really see that they would want to keep any they find now wrapped up - but still investigate them.

I'm not so worried about respecting someone who died 3000 years ago, but we don't learn anything more from disturbed bodies. The less we bother it, the more we can learn in the future.

We will be able to find out more in 50 or 100 years if we don't disturb the body. Technology is advancing all the rime.

These days in some of the Anasazi ruins they are leaving them undisturbed for the future - I think that's very forward thinking.

Here in Israel we are reburying some of the new finds so they don't get disturbed any more than necessary. The scientists and archaeologists can unbury them again in the future and find out even more about the past.

I agree, I hope they do find more mummies and can also leave them undisturbed while examining them remotely.

I've seen mummies, but we don't have any that I know of in Austin. Most of the ones I've seen have been at the British Museum.
