Why do most Metallica fans HATE the album "St. Anger"? |

Why do most Metallica fans HATE the album "St. Anger"? I was recently talking to my sister's boyfriend, and he was talking about how much he thinks it's "not even worth talking about". For the die-hard Metallica fans here at MyLot - why IS this? I'm just curious to know now.

2. ROYALG333 (107) | 10 months ago | I've been a Metallica fan since I can remember. My first album I bought in a store was And Justice for All. The reason why so many Metallica fans hate At.Anger is for a few reasons. First, ST/Anger was their first album in several years, and people expected more. Second, Metallica was known for their amazing production in the studio. On St.Anger, the band went completely 360 and kept a lot of "rawness" which was a good thing in theory, but in reality made the band sound like a crappy garage band. Third, the band is known for their guitar riffs and melodic choruses. On St.Anger, there were absolutely ZERO guitar solos and the riffs were mediocre. Needless to say, the band just didnt seem like they were going through some tough things away from the music that showed in their music.
About 2 years ago, I was able to visit Metallica at their HQ in SF. I asked Kirk Hammet personally if they were going to have guitar solos on the new CD. Low and Behold, the band redeemed themselves with DEATH MAGNETIC!

maezee (3939) | 10 months ago | Thanks for the answer! That's really what I was looking for. I hear people talk so much crap about that, that I figured I better just make a "discussion" about it. That's super cool that you got to meet Kirk - and who knows? Maybe you inspired them to have an awesome album? :D

| 4. metalheadohagan (56) | 9 months ago | Well, I myself love Metallica like they were one of the first metal bands I discovered alongside Iron Maiden. But I gotta say I to never understood why people hated St.Anger I thought it was a great album and yes it does has a coupe of big flaws (drums sounding like tin cans, no solos they repeated the chorus, verse to much) which is why I don't consider as good as an album as Ride The Lightning, but it does have 2 of my favourite Metallica songs on it Sweet Amber and My World again that's a personal opinion. But alot of Metallica fans just like to rip on metallica after The Black album for so called "Selling Out". But I guess it's just an opinion. Though I think Death Magnetic is great too(All Nightmare Long). Did you actually like St. Anger? Or are you even a Metallica fan? Anyways Happy Mylotting!!!

maezee (3939) | 9 months ago | I'm not really a "true fan" considering I only listen to what's on the radio and only own one album (the Black Album). I guess people are entitled to their opinions - it just seemed like I heard this complaint a lot. But thanks for clearing that up for me!

| 6. leodiaz (1) | 8 months ago | for a musician like myself, the way the songs were arranged was not METALLICA at all, the production...well i gotta say they are a notch higher than average and the melodic and pop hooks of JH just doesnt seem to fit them. I mean come on, they are old and they should write heavier stuff.

| Setto24 (90) | 7 months ago | Death Magnetic as a step Back?? Sometimes in our life we have to take a step back..... to set a great purpose in the future. Not to take a lot of step back. Make it settle and move on

| 8. Setto24 (90) | 7 months ago | Im not hate it harder than the others. But St. Anger sounds so diferent from the other album. it sounds... ah... li'l bit awful. Not really amazing.
Ah.. remember Lars' drum? is that sound of drum or oil drum? I said, "Ow, what the**** is this?"... Im I dreaming or.... yeah.. but somekind of monster edited version is good to listen carefuly, so as Frantic and The Unnamed Feeling.
It's very lucky that tey had Frantic. It's Frantic tic tic toc goes hurry!!!
Do I have a strenght, to hear all of this?! (LOL)

| 9. Russman (4) | 7 months ago | Well, here was the thing for me. St. Anger would of been a good album if it wasn't Metallica's. It didn't fit their standards and wasn't what fans expected. Like when you listen to Sweet Amber, its Lars just whacking on the drums like he's blind-folded, Kirk sounds like he's playing random chords, James's voice sounds like he didn't warm up before singing, and Rob is playing like he doesn't want to be heard. That's just my opinion. And I am a Metallica fan by the way.

10. modstar (4957) | 7 months ago | St. Anger is a disappointment. The sound quality sucks. The drums sounded like they're tin cans. It's like a much worse version of Load and Reload. I think they've gone soft on St. Anger. It should be St. Relax. Death Magnetic is ok and quite heavy. You see, Megadeth has been Metallica's long time rival and Megadeth's music is still the same even after 15 years ago. That's the barometer of Metallica's albums.
