Is screaming used realistically in films and TV dramas?

When you watch films and TV dramas, you see women who are being attacked screaming their heads off. If they are being chased, they are running along screaming every 5 seconds. I know this is done to increase the drama, and make it more exciting, but I find it very unrealistic. The only times I've screamed, it has been out of sudden shock. If I was being attacked or running away, I would save my energy for fighting back or escaping! What do you think - is it realistic?

All I know is that I absolutely hate all the screaming those girls do. Sometimes I just wish the bad guy would kill the screamer just to shut them up. The constant screaming tels me those females are to stupid to live.
