| |  According to Kathie Lee the little plastic baby represents the baby jesus. This was news to me as it apparently has been to a number of other non-catholic folks. I looked it up on wikipedia and there was a lot of information on the history that you just never hear about. The best king cakes came from McKenzie's, a bakery that no longer exists. Not all king cakes are created equal and I had one from Rouse's that left a lot to be desired. The traditional ones are the best and they are the best representation. That new stuff with the fillings that came along in the last decade is just oversized danish.

| | Oh, by the way, the cake itself isn't really cake. It's a large ring shaped bread with colored sugar on top. Some have icing on top before the colored sugar is applied but the "cake" itself is not sweet. Of course today there are many variations on the theme. As for the baby, if you get it at a party like at school or work you're supposed to buy the next one. Some places offer prizes if you get the baby from a cake they have provided at an event or celebration. | | | |
