Why do some cartoon characters wear white gloves? |
|
Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Woody Woodpecker and even Super Mario wear white gloves. What's with the glove? Does it have something to do with cartoon history or they're just art?

modstar (4959) | 11 months ago | That makes sense. Maybe it symbolizes the origin of the cartoon. Super Mario works in a pipe so he should have worn an industrial type gloves. Lol!

3. CatGods (1145) | 11 months ago | That is a good question and sorry I don't know the answer. But maybe is you googled it or went to www.disney.go.com maybe you could find the answer there?
I'm thinking they wear white gloves to do the white glove test to see how clean things are? Just guessing. And if you have time would you please take a look at my profile, thanks.

4. onedaysoon (413) | 11 months ago | I think maybe because it is easier to draw gloves than it is to draw hands. They are white gloves, because white goes with everything and is more attractive against the other colors. That is my theory.:o)

modstar (4959) | 11 months ago | Makes sense! A detailed gloveless hand would be too uncartoony and creepy for kids.

modstar (4959) | 11 months ago | Ah yes! The Woody Woodpecker cartoon i've watched this morning seemed like it's already old. I've seen some old Mickey Mouse cartoons and i'm convinced fashion has something to do with it.

10. catdla1 (2747) | 11 months ago | When some of these cartoon characters (Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, etc) were first introduced, it was normal and proper to wear gloves in public, especially for the 'uppercrust' people who could afford to take their children to the theaters to see these cartoons. Had they not worn gloves they may have been deemed 'improper' and not attended to heavily. (Also, cartoons themselves were introduced during the change over from live-performance vaudville to motion pictures. In vaudville, while gloves were worn simply so that the stage lights would shine on the hands to make them more visible to the audience.) Then the gloves became part of their character. For Mario, being a working class person, workgloves would be considered part of his uniform.
