The statistics show that Saturday is the day of the week with the highest rates of car accidents and fatalities with an average of 158 deaths each Saturday, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data. Saturday also has the highest number of fatalities when compared as a percentage of cars on the road, averaging 1.2 deaths per 100 million drivers, according to American Automobile Association.
August had the most total deaths on the road in 2008, a 1.1% decline from 2007, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data. A total of 3,612 people died that month. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that when counted as fatalities per 100 million vehicles, August has a fatality rate of 1.42--an increase of 0.06 since 2007 and 0.10 points higher than September and June.
July 4, Independence Day, historically has been the most dangerous day of the year to drive, according to the IIHS-HLDI: Crash Testing & Highway Safety. In 2007, 926 people were killed in auto accidents on July 4th.
When daily totals are averaged over a several-day period surrounding the holiday, Thanksgiving is the deadliest holiday weekend on the road, according to 2007 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.
I have a tendency to try and avoid driving on July 4th and Thanksgiving weekend, whenever I can, because I know the nuts are out there. Also, New Year's Eve, we always spend at home or get to my family's home a day or two earlier and just stay in. We no longer travel on that night.
I am assuming that the rates are up on those days/events just because more people are on the road and you get a lot of what we always called, "Weekend Drivers", people who do not drive much but go out on the weekends and for holidays and have less experience on the roads.
