Yesterday I was flipping channels and saw a show on Animal Planet called "Animals 101". One of the cat owners said the were a professional cat groomer. When one of her customers asked her to shave her Persian cat, she turned the hair into yarn and made a handbag out of it. Do you have a long-haired cat? If you do, would you want to have a handbag made from it's fur?

Normally I am not in support of anything that is animal. I would not like this idea if it was mass marketed though where there were farms of cats to be shaved for this either. But if a cat is in a loving home and is shave for comfort then the fur is just waste so by using it is actually a good thing.
But for myself I live in Eastern Canada where at least 8 months of the year are frosty and the others never get that warm, it would be cruel to shave any pet I have here so I would not do it.

I have heard about this and I saw "Cats 101", and I am not sure about that. I am not against cats hair being made into purses because honestly, what else is it going to be used for? Although, I don't think that I would want one.

Fur no, hair, maybe. My husband and I have this long haired cat that sheds everywhere, and we have enough cat hair around here to stuff a quilt!! It's unbelieveable the kind of hair we have in this apartment. LOL I have a black couch, and my cat is orangish white. I'll have to send this to my husband and see what he has to say. I've often wondered if I could spin all the cat hair around here, and make it into a sweater, or something.

My first response is "ugh, no!" Yet when I think of where wool and yarn come from in the first place... who knows, it could possibly work. I would wonder about the allergy potential of it but it could possibly work.

LOL
EVERYTHING i have might as well be..even if they don't physically sit on it,it ends up with fur on it anyway.
i don't think i'd want a purse, but i'd probably ask her to make me the yarn to make blankets for the shelter kittens, they're always asking for old quilts.

i would not want to use a bad made of cat's fur. that is really disgusting. cause i think that cat's hair is not healthy to touch or be near with often. cause i have read or heard of some people who are sensitive to the cat's hair and that it can give some disease. well anyways, i don't hair is scary . skin animals just fine but their hair. that is really quite strange specially if it is coming from a cat.

I am an animal lover, with 5 cats, one being a mini persian. Or as some have called them "Pixie Persians, she is only about 5lbs and has always been small, she is 16 going on 17 and so far in perfect health. She is my baby and will be totaly devistated when she goes. Would I have a hand bag made out of her fur? Sure, I've been searching the internet to see if I could find a website, and can't. Does anyone know of one?
Here is my issue with people who think it is "gross" or rediculous, they sell rodent fur and cattle skins in coats, jackets and scarfs all the time with fur and leather jackets on hte markey for hundreds of dollars. People upgrade their cars to leather seating and that is animal skins we are seeing as a luxury. Those animals had to die so we could put our high maintenance bum on that seat or wrap up in fuzzy rodent fur. Why is this so weird or gross or obsurd? The cat gets a hair cut, they are healthier because of it, and you also get a beautiful handbag out of the deal. . . I think that is a wonderful way to do it! I wouldn't use it, it would be on display, but I guess I just don't get all of the judgement.

I do have a long haired cat and i have to say i wouldn't want to have a handbag made out of her fur or anything. That is a little weird for me. I understand loving your cat and all, but making a handbag from her fur...

Hi Bd200789! I really would not want one. I know that it was made from the hair that was trimmed from a cat and that the cat was not harmed in the process, but I don't like bags made of any kind of hair or fur.
Take care and have a great day!

ooo
That totally grosses me out. Even though the hair is probably cleaned and processed before being made into yarn, I could never get the thought of that hair being licked all over by a cat.

Now that's just gross. If that lady wants a pet hair purse she can just collect the hair that her sweeper picks up and get some yarn and ..... please, somebody stop the insanity!

Hi Bd200789,
Well if you are grooming the cat and it long hair is been made up like that, well yes but people goes to extreme to kill cats for their hair so no I wouldn't, as it is in some places they are killing cat for their fur to make caoats, DISGUSTING!

A lot of people save their pets hair and weave it into things. I have thought of doing it,but I have enough to do and don't want to try and learn to spin.

I saw that show too! It was pretty interesting, I think I would get one from my own cat. I don't feel like I'd buy someone else's cat fur purse/bag. But my own cat, why not? I have a long haired one who usually is very bad at grooming himself so every now and then I actually *do* shave him, maybe it's worth looking into this purse business, haha :)
