What Is the News Media's Ethical Obligation?  |

|  What do you think? Do NEWS organizations have an ethical obligation to tell the truth even on their editorial page? The reason I ask this question is because of a recent political cartoon on the liberal side of the local newspaper which shows a poster of Rush Limbaugh with the wording "HOPE FOR FAILURE," implying that Rush wants our country to fail. That, of course, is not what Rush was implying when he said he wants Obama to fail. He very clearly said he wants the United States to succeed, but doesn't believe that's possible under Obama's plans.
I don't have a problem with anyone having differences of opinion, but I do have a problem when lying is used in order to advance an agenda. If you can't persuade by using reason and a convincing argument, then you don't have a case. To date I have not heard anyone on the left explain why Obama's policies will be good for the United States. Am I wrong?

| |  I think political cartoons should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't have any problem with it. I think the cartoonist is merely showing what is on peoples mind. I think they are meant as entertainment. Anybody taking political cartoons as news are destined to be misinformed.

| | Cartoons are just cartoons. Only a moron believes them. Sadly, we have far too many morons who DO believe what they see in political cartoons as well as skits on Saturday Night Live so I can understand your concern. What we need to really discuss is the articles they write that are blatant lies yet passed off as truth. The New York Times of course is the biggest sack of lies in print on the planet right now. Their writers literally write the same garbage you see in liberal blogs while making no attempt to determine if any of it is true.
The whole issue with Rush was his own making. You and I know what he really said, but he said it knowing full well it would be taken out of context. Otherwise he wouldn't have said "I hope he fails". He gave enough space between that and the actual context to allow them to steal the soundbite. Why? Because now they're giving him free advertising. He hasn't had this much popularity since the Clinton years. He LOVES the controversy and it has more people who hate him listening to him and improving his ratings. | | | | | | |
