18. umart13 (473) | 10 months ago | Hello sadiq007, my favourite black and white film is "Goodbye Mr. Chips" made in 1939, starring Robert Donat and Greer Garson. It is an English film about an aging schoolmaster set during the arly 20th century and the first world war and his memories of the school. It's a very sad film, but a very good one. This was released the same year as the American classic "Gone With The Wind", which won a load of Oscars. However, it was Robert Donat who won the Oscar for Best Actor - an Oscar which he deserved... Have a good week. Umart

19. UtopianIdealist (968) | 10 months ago | Last Year at Marienbad and Marihuana are my the black and white movies that I favour that come to mind.
Marienbad is somewhat dreamy, one of those that may come off as a bit of a bore at first, but is very strange the more you watch. You can watch it without sound as well, as it is not in english, but has subtitles.
Marihuana is a propaganda film from the 1930's that is a showcase of cinematography that was well funded, and without the morality standards of that time as it was produced under the guise of a PSA. It and the similar others (assassin of youth, so on) have a style that is interesting, as well as an incite to politics behind cinematography.

20. taface412 (1987) | 10 months ago | I love the Wizard of OZ, and I know someone else already said it, but my reason is because when I took my film appreciation class in college and we covered this film because it was when the big transition from B&W to color was happening. And they were trying to rush production so they would be the first to go from B&W to color...so that is why the film changes like it does with technicolor not only to tell you that Dorothy is not in Kansas anymore, but it also was showing the improvement of the cinema but also how the society as a whole during the Great Depression. This film is much more than entertainment, with all the history behind it.
SO I say Wizard of OZ.
