Barbie Celebration! You remember Barbie, Don't You? |
As you probably heard on the news this week, Barbie has turned 50! That's right, she has been around for 50 years now! I had several Barbie dolls growing up and still have one of the "originals" although her clothing got misplaced through the years. I loved playing with Barbie Dolls and passed the tradition on to my own girls. Now there are special collectible Barbie Dolls that are one the expensive side, but the normal dolls are still reasonable.
An interesting fact that I heard on the news this week is that a Barbie Doll is sold every 3 seconds in the world! That is a lot of Barbie Dolls! She is just as popular now as in the 60's when she hit the doll world with a blaze. So did you have Barbie Dolls when you were growing up? Do you buy Barbie Dolls for your daughters, nieces, granddaughters or for your children's friends for gifts? Barbie Dolls are still one of my favorite gifts to buy for little girls!

| 1. amy_rebecca (18) | 10 months ago | We bought our daughter a Barbie the other day. Its an nniversary one and it was only 3 dollars. Its the upgrade to the barbie that has the black and white swimsuit on. My daughter is only 9 months so parbie is staying in the box for a couple years. haha

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | I saw the anniversary doll on TV. She looks like the original dolls from late 50's and 60's. I would save it for her or start a collection. You got a great deal on the Barbie Doll too! I would have picked up a couple of them at that price (saved a couple for gifts for Christmas and/or birthdays!)

| amy_rebecca (18) | 10 months ago | Dang, I probely should have got some to save for gifts....But I think that night we only had like 15 dollars on us. haha...maybe they still have them.

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | I foresee another shopping trip in the planning. LOL! Good luck in finding more at that price!

| amy_rebecca (18) | 10 months ago | Thanks! I looked at the other walmart on the other side of town cause i wanted to show my sister, and they didn't have them at all.

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | :( I wonder if they priced them wrong? Did you check online for them?
| |
| amy_rebecca (18) | 10 months ago | I haven't looked online. I don't think they priced them wrong...there was a whole little display just for them. I couldn't find that same doll at the other walmart at all. hmmm...

2. abanerji (905) | 10 months ago | any girl who has played with a barbie doll would not forget it. i still have my barbie dolls with me. one has a broken leg and one with a broken neck, another is still in a good condition. i still cherish them. well, whenever i have to gift something to a little girl, i try to go in for gifting a barbie. nothing else can be a better gift. i still would like to receive a barbie doll in gift. but at my age i can only keep it as a decoration and not use it for playing.

3. vivasuzi (1861) | 10 months ago | I can't believe people still play with Barbies:) It's just funny because you would think after 50 years they would have a new toy out that girls love. I had barbies growing up and I mostly liked playing with them when friends were over. We had various costumes but not a ton. We never got into the cars and houses or anything like that - just the dolls themselves.
I think I would get my child into barbie dolls b/c I think they are fun for young girls. I'd probably venture out and try some of those houses or kitchen set ups or whatever that they have now adays. Barbie is better than a lot of other things girls are into now adays.

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | Yes, they were a lot of fun. I had lots of clothes for mine because I had an aunt next door that loved to sew! She was always making Barbie doll clothes for me with leftover fabric! It was really neat!
True, Barbie is a better icon to introduce young girls to today. At least you don't have to worry about what she is going to go out and do in public like real life role-models for kids like Miley Cyrus or Jamie Lynn Spears:)
| |
vivasuzi (1861) | 10 months ago | Exactly... Barbie is pretty safe and anyone that criticizes the doll is just being picky.
We did have a neighbor around the corner who had EVERYTHING, the houses, the clothes, the cars. But she was my sisters age so I never played with it much. I had fun making my own fun with barbies using my other toys and games.
Cool that you got all those free clothes made! I never knew anyone into sewing clothes or anything besides blankets:-D I gotta find a friend who has that hobby:)

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | I remember when my little cousin got a fancy Barbie doll house. Even though I was older, I was jealous! I used to sew, but I don't think I could handle such tiny projects on a machine. My aunt used to make anything and everything. She does wedding dresses also, so I guess she had the patience for the tiny things too! I know she loved sewing:)

4. lotterylover (4841) | 10 months ago | My daughters have quite a few Barbies still even though they are grown. Unfortunately, I am the one who has to store them. I remember going to a program put on my James Dobson where he said you should not let your little girls play with Barbies. My daughter asked if I were going to take all her Barbies away from her. I didn't.

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | Hi lotterylover! So what was the reasoning behind not letting your daughters play with Barbie? I'd love to know!
| |
lotterylover (4841) | 10 months ago | I think it was that it gave girls the wrong conception of what a women is suppose to look like. Possibly the cause of dieting in unhealthy ways.

5. snowcat46 (1112) | 10 months ago | Since my daughter's name is Barb, I tried to get her one every year. She didn't care for them much. Especially since her dog at the time, a female, had it in for them. She was constantly burying them and taking them out of the gir's room to hide them. But the Ken dolls suffered the most. The dog loathed the male dolls.??? My kid could not keep one in the house without it being massacred within a day. Literally torn apart. Barbie dolls were just hidden, maybe chewed on a bit, but nothing like the damage inflicted on the Ken's!

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | Hi snowcat46,
That is an odd quirk for your dog to have! I'm sorry your daughter's Barbies all got torn up!

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | Hi lotterylover--that would really be neat if we could talk to the animals and totally understand them and know what they are thinking!

7. change1life (1163) | 10 months ago | I use to have Barbie dolls. I loved them when I was a child. I also had the Barbie townhouse with the elevator. It was so cool to be able to have furniture and clothes and all of that to play with. My sister and me also got the camper and one of the cars the same year we got the townhouse for Christmas. We had been asking for a dollhouse for several years so we were ecstatic when we got up that morning and there it was finally. We were in hog heaven, so to speak. As for buying for nieces, they are all to old for dolls now and I don't have any granddaughters to buy for yet. I have a couple of great nieces but they are in another state so I don't get to see them much. God Bless!

8. MaryLynn321 (479) | 10 months ago | I never had a Barbie doll, but I did have skipper her sister. I had a Tammy doll and a Shirley Temple doll. I use to sew and make Barbie clothes to sell, and then later made them for my daughter and the neighborhood kids. It was a lot of fun, don't think I could sew that small anymore, lol.
| |
| |
kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | I had a skipper too! I sewed when my girls were small and tried the Barbie clothes one time...that was it. Way to small for me and I found I didn't have the patience..haha!
| |
MaryLynn321 (479) | 10 months ago | I had the patience when my kids were younger, and so was I, LOL. I enjoyed it. But don't think my hands could handle such tiny pieces anymore. I enjoyed my skipper doll. Do they even have skipper anymore?
| |
kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | Good question! I haven't browsed the Barbie aisle in some time since my girls are all grown and no granddaughters here either. My nieces are all older now too--gee I'm telling on my age now...LOL. I remember Midge too. They were all fun! Have a wonderful day!
| |
MaryLynn321 (479) | 10 months ago | That is right there was a Midge too. I enjoyed my skipper doll. My girlfriend had a barbie, so we did the sister thing. I will have to check the barbie aisle the next time I shop to see, and also look her up on the internet.

kareng (3592) | 10 months ago | There were several others that came along when my girls were growing up, but for the life of me...I don't remember the names. Showing age here...memory is failing..LOL!
| |
MaryLynn321 (479) | 10 months ago | I guess I never noticed when my daughter was growing up if there was any sister or cousin dolls that were with Barbie. Will have to look it up.
