Top O' The Morning To You. Are Ye Wearing A Wee Bit Of The Green Today? email this discussion to a friend?

Well today, March 17th as you know is St. Patrick's Day, and whether or not you're into celebrating St. Patrick per se since folks of Irish heritage know the real truth behind St. Patrick's "mission" (and no not to drive snakes out of Ireland, but to destroy the pagan religions--but not going to get too political here at the moment)ninja

The thing is, St. Patrick's Day is still a day to celebrate in general Irish heritage. I'm part Irish myself (along with other ethnic groups)....and yes I get my Irish up and wear a bit of the green on this day. My Irish heritage comes from part of my maternal line...the first person to come to America from Ireland was my great-great grandfather Edward Burk (that's how he spelled it) and came in 1851 from County Claire and I still have his signed declaration to become an American and forsake his former homeland. My Irish great-grandmother's line is a bit sketchier but were of the Lees from County Mayo (God Preserve Us as those from that county would often say).

We Irish are a stubborn lot..we're proud as hell, we're fighters, known to have tempers and hissy fits... whistle--given that I'm also part Scottish, Welsh and English...now you just KNOW how stubborn I can be. rolleyesBut as they say on St. Patrick's Day everyone seems to love celebrating with a bit of the green... do you even if you're not Irish? How many of you are of Irish blood? Do you celebrate with the traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage meal and perhaps some Irish Soda Bread? Do you drink a bit of the Guinness? Mead? Ale? I'm thinking of fixing a genuine dinner for myself as I have to admit I haven't had it in ages....nix the beer though as I'm not into beer...LOL

And now for a wee bit of entertainment here...here is a YouTube video of Riverdance....get those feet dancing folks....LOL

My great grandmother from my mom's dad's side was a Dailey/Daily/Daley from the County Cork. Apparently there are still relatives over there.

My father's name is Irishized Scot, when the English sent the protatsant Scots to Ireland, they Irishized their names and came to America.

The first one came over with William Penn.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11660)   ranked 1 out of 34 in celebrating st. patrick's day  10 months ago

The Irish names in my family were Burk(e), Maddock, Lee and Kelley...yikes try to find the history behind common names like Lee and Kelley.. surrender
I'd really like to find out more about my great-grandmother's line as it was thought there origins were actually older in America than the potato famine years and may have first settled in the south ...my great-grandmother had many southern traditions that were thought strange in Brooklyn, NY...LOL

myLot reputation of 99/100. ElicBxn (15533)   ranked 2 out of 34 in celebrating st. patrick's day  10 months ago

Well, all the ancestors came over before Ellis Island opened, but only just barely.

That includes both of mom's grandmothers and her grandfather on her mother's side. The Pateral name side came to settle in New Amsterdam, but her grandfather married the Dailey, and her mother's side was German/English - her English grandfather wouldn't let her German grandmother teach any of the children German. However, a couple of words slipped down to us anyway - thank you and bless you (when you sneeze).

All my ancestors on my other ethnic groups came to America long before Ellis Island also...mainly in the late 1600s and early 1700s--that would be the German side mainly and French, Spanish, Dutch, English, Scottish and Welsh

Good morning Pye! I am actually of German descent which also explains my bad temper and sometimes harsh manner of speaking! I enjoyed the video very much-- a few years ago Riverbend was here in Chattanooga. I would have loved to go see them perform as I think they are amazing but I missed it.

I could never understand why Irish dancing does that..meaning keeping one's arms down like that...when the scottish do that kind of dancing they don't

I, too, have a wee bit of Irish in me, a wee bit less than I'd hoped since my Irish turned out to be Scots Irish, but we hail from County Derry, Limavady Newtown area, Tamlagh Finlagen parish. My mother's great-grandfather and his wife and three small children came to the US along with his all of his wife's siblings but two, and settled in the Millville, NJ, area of Cumberland County. They worked for the glass plant as glassblowers. Even Mom's grandfather, who was the first child born here, was working for the glass plant at age 11.

It troubles me to think that any of my ancestors might be associated with "The Troubles" of Northern Ireland. I like to think that they themselves did not agree with the treatment of the native Irish by the British. They moved here around 1865, around 16 years after the infamous potato famine. I wasn't raised with religious or ethnic prejudice and I hope that's because of the influence of my Irish line, since that's the line my mother so closely identified with. Even her sister, a mere three generations later, married a Catholic, so I just don't see my branch being among those who felt the political animosities of others.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11660)   ranked 1 out of 34 in celebrating st. patrick's day  10 months ago

I would love to trace my great-grandparents line in Ireland itself...but yikes I'm dealing with common names like Kelly, Burke and Lee. I guess my great-grandparents weren't involved with the political ideals of Ireland as even though they were Catholic, they didn't bat an eye when my mother married a Methodist...LOL

myLot reputation of 93/100. jerzgirl (2783)   ranked 10 out of 34 in celebrating st. patrick's day  10 months ago

Kind of how I feel about mine with names like Miller and Forrest, although there is a McClean in the Forrest line. I haven't found anything beyond the Miller who came here with his wife Catherine. I know where he lived, and there are Millers still there, but I don't know who he connects to. I didn't have time the one partial day we were in the area to check out their historical center. But, I did go the records office in Belfast and STILL didn't find anything. I did, however, find the passenger records of their coming to the USA. Apparently, Catherine had an older brother who ventured over first before the rest followed.

myLot reputation of 93/100. jerzgirl (2783)   ranked 10 out of 34 in celebrating st. patrick's day  10 months ago

Oh, and my Irish were Church of Ireland and Episcopalian there, but when they got here, they attended Methodist...most likely because it was the "only game in town".

I am excessivly Irish. Red hair, light skin... I wont tell you my last name on a public forum, but trust me... its screams Irish LOL.

But Im dressed in black today, with some red accents. I shouldnt have... already people are asking me "Hey! Your Irish! Where is your green!?!"

Annoying as hell, really.

I just tell them I dont support cultural genocide, then go about my day.

My mother is Irish, and pagan... so thats where I learned the truth. But it didnt stop there... my fathers family are Iroquois Native American.

You dont even want to get me started about Christopher Columbus day LOL.

I just got the temper and the inability to tan...lol

Yup--I took a peeky at your MySpace profile and saw your VERY red-headed son...LOL...Did you know it used to be the belief that people with red hair were thought to be witches?? I guess perhaps maybe since for the most part red-hair wasn't common. Most of the Irish on my maternal side were blondes...except for my great-grandfather who had black hair..."black Irish"--meaning having Spanish roots (no pun intended)--my mother though was the only flaming natural redhead..me? Born with black hair..go figure--must have been the French, German, Native American coming out there

myLot reputation of 47/100. sndcain36 (2667)   ranked 27 out of 34 in celebrating st. patrick's day  10 months ago

I had heard the old superstition about redheads...and I know my father thought my mother was a "witch"...or maybe it was b1tch...lol

My oldest was born redheaded but darkened by the first 6 months...and I was born a redhead...my paternal grandmother was full Cherokee but not a drop of it showed up on me...the Irish runs strong in my blood.....my ancestors came here and settled in the Appalachians so not only do I have strong Irish roots I'm a total hillbilly too...lol

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (11660)   ranked 1 out of 34 in celebrating st. patrick's day  10 months ago

Well my anglo blood must have taken over since I'm "lily white"---LOL...though that doesn't really mean anything as I know full blood Mohawks just as "white"---Some yahoo actually started an argument with me and kept saying I didn't look "Indian"----I tend to wear a lot of Native American type jewelry when I'm out including one of those bone choker necklaces I made myself...so this twit kept saying "You're not Indian"--sheesh what did he want me to do...ride on a horse wearing full regalia on and ride into the sunset???

Happy St Paddy's Day to ye! I'm sitting here in my Boston shamrock tee shirt. It's too early to cook yet, but we'll be having the corned beef & cabbage dinner later. I have the fixins for the Irish soda bread, but since it's supposed to be in the mid 80's here today, I might make it Thursday when it's cooler and serve it with the corned beef hash.
I'm may or may not have Irish in me, my dad's mother was an orphan. Growing up, people used to call me Irish, since I have red hair and freckles. Who knows? An aunt living next door was Boston Irish, and had brothers in the fire and police departments. We used to have an unrivaled fireworks display in the summer with all the stuff that was confiscated (fireworks are illegal in MA, but people drive to NH to get them anyway). There's something to be said for growing up in the boonies. Invite a few neighbors and there isn't anyone left to complain or report us.
If I have to describe the Irish people who have been a part of my life...it would be passionate. No matter what they did, whether work, play, love...they did it with passion. It's all the way, or no way for them.
Bottoms up! to everyone Irish or celebrating Irish today!

LOL--oh yes, the Irish are a passionate folk....They endured a lot of hardships when they came to America as they were often targeted against and US citizens often claimed that the Irish took jobs away from Americans...gee, sounds kind of familiar doesn't it? My mother and grandmother told me that in my great-grandparents time that the common signs on windows was "Irish need not apply"--for jobs
