Anybody had back surgery twice that actually helped you with the pain?

My sister in law is going to have surgery done in a few weeks. It'll be her second surgery on her lower back. The sciatic nerve is causing her a lot of pain, and she's having trouble walking on one leg. She had the steroid shots-the first one worked, but the second one didn't. The surgeon will take two bulging discs out, and replace them with metal cages. I've never heard of anyone having successful back surgery; the friends I have have had the same thing done, and one of them wound up in a wheel chair. I tried to get her to get a second opinion, but her mind is made up. I just hope my brother can cope with his wife being out of commission, lol. Yeah, he's one of those dinosaurs who expects dinner on the table, even though he knows better-my Mama didn't raise him to be that way.

Has she heard of spinal decompression? Many doctors say that it gets better results than surgery and is a lot safer--at least it does no harm, and usually does some good. I think of surgery as a last resort, sounds as if your sister wants something done fast. I don't blame her, back pain is awful, but she should look into alternatives.
