Do you have nicknames for your dog? |
| |
| Our dog's name when we first brought him home from the SPCA was "Todd" - who would name their dog that? We changed him name to Rocky as it had somewhat the same sound and we thought it suited him. But we also call him other things like Rockstar, Rocket, and my husband calls him Binky dog (?). Rocky just loves all the attention and doesn't seem to care what you call him as long as he's getting love... Do you think this is confusing for him? | | | | | |

| | My German Shepherd's name is Kelly, but I often call her other nicknames here and there. When she's sleeping, I sometimes call her Peanut. The Peanut nickname goes back to when she was a puppy and real little, the way she curled up into things she looked like a peanut lying in a shell lol. Of course it doesn't really fit her now, she weighs in at around 75-100#. She's the same way as yours, as long as the name you're calling her is given during attention and love, she doesn't care and still will do as she's being told to do. I don't know, but I don't think it's all that confusing to them because there is the basis of 'love' & 'master' still behind it all. | | | | | | |

| | I agree that it is more about tone of voice and expression than the words that we say to our pets. Rocky was an abused dog (you can tell by how he reacts and behaves sometimes... so sad) and he is really sensitive to tone of voice and also dislikes loud people. I wish we could have got Rocky as a puppy, but it was so much more important to adopt a dog that needed a loving home. Thanks for your response and Happy Mylotting! | | | |

| | I have a couple of nicknames for my dog. When we first got him we named him Benjamin and hes a little cockapoo weighing about 11 pounds now. We seem to call him Benj, Benji, Pookie, Pook and he comes to all of them, i think maybe because he knows are voice really good. He also listens to are voice because when we get mad and want him to come in and we have a mean tone to our voice he knows to get in the house now so he doesn't get a spaken. My in laws have a sharpay and he thinks e is a little dog but hes a really big dog and he wants all the attention and to lay on you. Hes not so tiny to be laying on you. His name is wrangler, but they also call there dog Pookie. Its funny how we give our dogs the same name. | | | | | | |

| | Dogs are sooo funny! Our boy thinks he's a lap dog also, and he weighs about 65lbs now! Also, he thinks he's human as by the time it is 7 pm or so, he looks at me and looks down the hall. Looks at me and looks down the hall. He wants to go to bed - my bed! He is allowed to snuggle with us at night while we watch a movie and then sleeps on his own bed at the foot of ours for the night. As soon as you start to wake up, he lets out these funny little whines cause he wants to come up for a morning snuggle. He gets frustrated also cause our cat pretty much runs the house and is on the bed whenever she wants! He also gets quite jealous if you talk to Libby or pet her - he's right there sticking his nose under your hand for some loving too. Little dogs always have such big personalities, but I prefer a dog that I can feel safe with as we live on a rural property. Thanks for your response and Happy Mylotting! | | | |

| | I don't think it's confusing to them. Like was said above, it's more about the tone than the actual word. My Akita is named Keyser Soze. I usually just call him Keyser, but I also call him Mr. Soze, Kaidor and Dog. I figured calling him Dog was easier on my toddler who has a speech disorder. I have no clue where Kaidor came from. My dad calls him Bernard...again, no clue where that came from. But, Keyser comes to all the names. Heck, I could probably call him Toad and he'd come! (He thinks he's a lap dog too...at 95 lbs!) | | | | | | |

| | I really like your dog's name! Very original, does it mean anything? Your dad's name for him, that's funny too. Hey, does your Akita like to eat cats? We tried to adopt an akita/shepherd/rotti cross from the spca recently (this 10 mo. old dog was the size of a small horse!) but he really wanted to eat my cat. I finally had to return him after 4 days because I just couldn't trust him (my cat has the run of the house) and I didn't feel that the cat was safe around him :( | | | |

| | When I was a kid we had 2 dogs. The first was Persiverance because my parents said that my brother showed this trait in going after getting a dog. He wanted a dog so bad and nagged and nagged about it. And looked up adds in the paper... taped the adds on the fridge. Haha. Anyhow, it was kind of weird to go around calling a dog that long name. So we just called her 'Percy'. The second dog we had was Von Spiken Burg. Okay, so we just picked him up at the local farm supply store one day. And he was part German Shepherd and part Rottweillar. And my dad was like, those are both German dogs so he needs a German sounding name. And, he came up with that one which made us kids laugh and claim it. But, we always called him Spike. Spike is actually still alive now. He is living with my brother and his girlfriend and her dog 'Benny' Haha. Anyhow. I don't really have a dog living with me at this time. | | | | | | |

| | It's funny how people will come up with names for their dogs! Your dad is a pretty creative guy, I love Von Spiken Burg! I nagged my husband for about a year about getting another dog. We had a shepherd/rotti cross, Shale, for 8 years. He was 5 when we adopted him and was such a great dog. When we had to have him put to sleep (hip dysplasia), my husband was really upset and swore he never wanted another dog. I told him that it was all part of having pets and that I would always have them. We didn't have a dog for 2 years, but now we have the Rocket Dog. I missed having a dog, and am so happy he is part of our family. Thanks for your response and happy mylotting! | | | |

| | My dogs name is Ike, sometimes I find myself calling him "honey", "Mr Stinky" or closest nickname to the real thing is when I call him "Mr Ike". I really don't think he cares what we call him, he's spoiled and he knows it! | | | | | | |

| | I like the name Ike for a dog. Your nicknames are cute too. I agree that he probably doesn't care what you call him as long as you have love in your voice. It's hard not to spoil a dog! It's funny how many different names you can come up with, aye? Happy Mylotting! | | | |

| | That's hilarious! My husband comes up with similiar names for our dog... Binky, Rockstar, Rockmeat (?), etc. I sometimes call him bonehead or knucklehead too. Not so much cause of his behaviour, but because he has a knobby on the top of his head (I was told this is a pitbull trait). I agree that once the dog knows his name, he will come to just about anything! Happy Mylotting! | | | |

| | I don't think dogs get confused by their pet names at all. I have 2 adopted dogs, one whose name is Julio and one named Chica. Julio resembles a doberman and Chica a rottie. I call Julio, who, who who, big boy and the whoster. Chica comes to cheeks and blondie (for obvious reasons, she's not real bright. But they both come running to whatever I call them with their little nubs just a wagging! | | | | | | |

| | I think it's just natural to call your dogs by lots of names. I can't seem to help myself. I also call him buddy, my friend and little buddy. I think that if they love you, they will come to anything as long as there is love in your voice. Happy Mylotting! | | | |

| | I think everyone has some kind of nickname or way of getting their dogs attention, wheather it be a word or sound. My dogs name is Marley. After I think about it I often call him Mar, but but besides that I mostly refer to him as Marley. My girlfriend on the other hand has too many name to even list for my dog. Everything from Marley to Moo Moos to Pup Pups. Some of the name she comes up with dont even make sense. Do you know anyone who makes up srange nicknames for their pets? | | | | | | |

| | My husband is great for coming up with crazy names for our dog, and our cat too. He sounds like your girlfriend! The latest one this morning was "Binkums" - where does he come up with this stuff? Rocky sure doesn't care though, but he just loves any/all attention as long as it's loving attention. Happy Mylotting! | | | |

| | I am sorry for your loss... it's so hard when a pet passes away. He sounds like he had quite the personality! They can be so funny sometimes. When I was a kid, we had 2 dogs "Tisada" and "CheeChee". I don't remember calling them by anything by their given names, but we sure call our dog now by lots of nicknames. Thanks for your response and Happy Mylotting! | | | |
