Modest Swimwear for Christian and Muslim Women - Why?

Okay, I have to ask this! Keep in mind I'm not being totally judgmental here. I too wanted a more "modest" swimsuit and got something that slightly covers my thighs. But a full on dress with leggings underneath to swim in? I can sort of understand the reasoning behind this for Muslim women, because they are always so well covered. So it makes sense to me that they are also covered in the water. But why do certain types of Christian denominations feel the need to wear such hideous swimwear? Even the children who have no ugly body to hide yet. Can anyone explain this to me? It doesn't even seem safe they look so hard to swim in. For those of you that have no clue what this is about, look up modest swimwear. If you've ever seen that TV show about the Duggars (that family with 18 children) they have a link on their website for this type of swimwear. Before people who wear this swimsuits all come over and flame me, really I just want to know why. Yes, it is my opinion it is hideous. But I wouldn't bother you at the beach or anything (not that I've ever seen anyone wearing such outfits at the beach). It is not my intention to anger you, I just want to know what the deal is with this. And if others who don't belong to these faiths want to comment too, that's all good too!

While I don't wear the out-and-out dress swimsuit (it would drive me nuts), neither do I wear really skimpy bikinis. My swimsuit of choice is a nice one-piece, preferably with a racer back so the straps don't fall off my shoulders, which would cause great embarrassment. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find one-piece racer-back swimsuits lately. :(

No bikinis for me either! Have you tried Land's End? I found my swimsuit there this year and noticed they had a bunch of racer back swimsuits as well. I don't like those personally since they're always so tight on me, but I did notice they had a lot. I ended up getting a retro style swimsuit that covers the thighs a bit and it does have a strap connector so the straps stay on. It is really good quality and I'm thinking it will last me several years. Covering the thighs does make me look shorter, but when you're 5'3" it's hard not to always look a bit short. At least it slims my waistline!

I've seen the ones that are made for racing in and to keep swimmers warm in cold water without it actually being a wetsuit but, I know I definitely couldn't wear something like this as I think I would just be too uncomfortable!

I think if it serves a purpose though, then that is okay. Personally, I wouldn't want to wear those either. I've seen them though, the ones with the long leggings attached and sometimes even with long sleeves too. But long shorts would be okay with me as long as the suit wasn't so tight it was cutting off circulation or something. But the swimsuits with dresses attached (not just skirts, but full on long length dresses) seem ridiculous. It would make it more difficult to swim.
