how would you copy it to make your own? I can knit but not that experienced...any help from experienced knitters would be great as my housemate has a knitted teddy that my daughter loves & I would like to re-create it.

There are plenty of free patterns on-line for things like that at websites for the major yarns like lionbrand. And if you want to improve your skills many of the craft stores have classes. I don't knit--I crochet and I am not very good.

I would probally just try to make it by site. I crochet not knit and my daughter does as well. We make crochet dolls and animals. If I want to make a teddy bear I would look up a pattern for one and make some different stitching to make it look like the one I like.

The only things that I know how to knit are scarves. If my grandmother was still alive, she could knit anything she wanted. If she was still around, I'd show her a picture of the toy, and she's be able to copy it perfectly. She had amazing talent. I miss the living crap out of her.

The yarn companies post free patterns on their websites on some have email you can sign up for. Lion Brand has a lot of nice patterns you should check out.

I crochet too , not knit, but if you can follow the pattern for personal use I dont see why not. Sometimes you cannot find the item that you bought a few months ago anymore. Good luck!
