My daughter's foray into the world of Volunteer Firefighters

My daughter Kristen is dating a young man who is an EMT for our ambulance service. But on the days off from the ambulance, he is also a volunteer fireman. He would like to do this full time, but can't until he turns 21 in September.
Earlier tonight Kristen and he were out and he got a fire call. He was not far from the fire, so he took her with him. She called me from the cab of his pick-up to tell me that she was getting to watch him put out a fire. She was very calm, which surprised me.
They had dated a year or so ago, and she broke it off because she didn't want to be the wife of a fireman. I think him taking her with him was probably a good thing because it gave her an idea of what he does. She seems to be more accepting of his chosen profession now. They are back here at the house now. Mike and Jon are talking about fighting fires, and Kristen keeps throwing in comments here and there.
So I guess my question to all of my friends here is this: What is your experience with firemen? Is there one in your family? Have you had the honor of meeting your local firemen? How about watching them do what they're trained to do?

My grandfather was a volunteer fireman, like most of the men in his family, but since I lived 1500 miles away in Texas, and he was retired by the time I can remember, I don't know much about it.
I do remember at his furneral, the firemen honored him - but even then I was only like 13 years old so that was a LONG time ago!

That's cool. Today as I was driving to school, the company that is stationed closest to the college I attend were working a wreck. The police had just gotten there, but it looked as though the fireman got there before anyone. They were directing traffic, washing debris from the street, and holding a baby, who seemed fascinated by their hats!
