I don't know about you but ever since that massive peanut recall just a few months ago, I've yet to get ANYTHING with peanuts.
Well ladies and gentlemen of MyLot land...hold on to yer hats (or whatever) as now there is another recall, and this time its pistachios due to salmonella contamination ...not only just pistachios in the shell, but could affect ANY AND ALL foods that contain pistachios, including ice cream, cookies, cakes, candies...this news is so new that there isn't even a listing out of what foods to avoid that may have pistachios in them
Here's an article I found:
Federal food safety officials warned Monday that consumers should stop eating all foods containing pistachios while they figure out the source of a possible salmonella contamination.
Still reeling from the national salmonella outbreak in peanuts, the Food and Drug Administration said central California-based Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc., the nation's second-largest pistachio processor, was voluntarily recalling a portion of the roasted nuts it has been shipping since last fall. A Setton spokeswoman said that amounts to more than 2 million pounds of nuts.
"Our advice to consumers is that they avoid eating pistachio products, and that they hold onto those products," said Dr. David Acheson, assistant commissioner for food safety. "The number of products that are going to be recalled over the coming days will grow, simply because these pistachio nuts have then been repackaged into consumer-level containers."

I don't know about you....but somehow I don't think this is going to be the last we hear of any kind of contamination of nuts...what's next? Walnuts? Almonds? Cashews??
Like what the crap is wrong here? Why are we getting so many recalls of foods????

I don't know why it keeps happening, but I don't expect it to get any better any time soon. I am just thankful that mylot has people like you and Whiteheather who continue to keep us apprised of these things.
I'll be OK until they start recalling Triscuits, then I'll likely have to hurt somebody.

LOL--I just looked at the Triscuits site to see what the ingredients are...seems you're safe so far..LOL.... I was actually looking to see if any of the Triscuits had that High Fructose Corn Syrup crap in it...I'm now reading labels like crazy, if I see it in the food, I put it back...HFCS is one of the worse things one can eat, and it's practically in everything, even foods you wouldn't expect it to be in--wheat thins DOES have it

Hey pye! I can't believe that now they are ruining another
of my favorite nuts! I love pistachios! How can this be
happening! They have shells! How does salmonella get into
nuts with shells! They are killing all the nuts! First they
ruined my peanut butter, now they are killing pistachio
ice cream for me! Next the will take my cashews away too!
No nuts are safe anymore! We need to protect our nuts! What
can we do to keep our nuts safe? We need to ban together to
save our nuts!(And as you can tell I am crazy about nuts because
I am one too!)

All the food companies really need to get their act together and keep ALL our food safe...uh, not just our nuts...(sorry again...that line just struck me so funny)

Out of all nuts, pistachios are not on my list to eat. However, the question remain why nuts are infected with salmonella. The only answer is that nuts are on the same production line as other food, so it is cross contaminated very easy.

Yes it could be cross contamination of different foods, but the pistachios in question (same with the peanuts) are processed in factories where that is the only product

With all the food recalls, I stopped worrying and checking out every product I buy/eat. Figure, if it's my time to go then I go. Besides, I don't like Pistachios.

Not sure the symptoms of food poisoning is but if it's constant poops, then I'm sure I've suffered quite a bit of it but that's all I end up doing is spending more time on the throne.

I think the whole main problem is food that is processed in general, even nuts since they are usually roasted...guess the more we stay away from processed foods the better, no? I actually did have a case of food poisoning though...NOT fun

It's crazy isn't it? I subscrib to some site that emails me when there are recalls on food products, needless to say I now get an email every day about new recalls. I think we need a little more regulation on food safty.

Are you talking about the USDA and FDA sites? I subscribe to them too and you're right, everyday I get some alert about a new food that is being recalled.

I guess people need to be sure their nuts are imported. It's hard on the US pistachio market, but if they cant keep there food safe what choice do people have?

I think I would be more afraid of getting foods from other countries too...in fact many of our foods DO come from foreign countries where pesticides that were banned years ago here are still being used in those countries.

Not necessarily...one article I read said the pistachios might be in cake or cookie mixes so might still be on the shelves

Well, I guess I wont be eating pistachios...but then I don't remember the last time I had any.
I think our media covers more and we have better techniques to detect these things. Plus things are processed on a larger scale so that a problem occurs on a larger scale.
I will do what I have always done...I did not stop eating peanut products...and I am still here.

Do you know I'm STILL hesitant about eating tomatoes after all that mess about salmonella and tomatoes from last summer? Guess this contamination can happen with anything though.... I did have a bout of food poisoning once...NOT nice

probably cross contamination in the machines with improper cleaning.
i can't believe the things i've been seeing with labels of "may contain nuts"
that aren't products that should have nuts.
my guess would be people's dirty hands touching different things without gloves or washing though.

Yes I've been noticing labels like that that say something that the food item is processed where nuts have been processed...

Morning Pye; I just saw that on the news this morning!! its just crazy isn't it?
I personally don't eat that many things with this kind of nut except for one of my recipes which I've not made in a long time but good grief!!
Makes ya wonder doesn't it? I love nuts but haven't had the money to buy them for many many months now and #2 I've got so many "dental problems" I wouldn't be able to eat them anyway right now but I sure wish these companies would get their acts together and STOP contaminating so many things!!! Fricken morons!!

I really wonder if other types of nuts are going to be affected soon, since I imagine they all process the different nuts the same way as peanuts and now pistachios. Luckily I haven't gotten any since as you say they are so expensive now especially if you need them for baking certain kinds of goodies.

Actually nuts aren't really so cheap anymore..LOL...yeah, maybe something like peanut butter but not bags or canisters of nuts themselves. I know since I USED to use a lot in my baked goods...can't do that anymore

Pistachios in particular are anything but cheap. I must confess I've splurged a couple times and gotten the cans of "Pistachio Lovers" nuts and even the container of pistachios that are already shelled until they raised the price to about $8!

Yea, it seems there has been a lot of recalls lately. I don't care for pistachios myself but it still seems there has been to many recalls. You don't ever think about how many things peanuts can be in until there is a recall and you have to worry about. Lately it seems like everything we like or want to eat has some sort of peanut in it.
Hopefully they can find out what is causing this contamination so we can back to having all the good stuff we have been having to go without!

I know the amount of foods with peanuts is staggering...did you know they even recalled dog biscuits cause they had a peanut paste in them? Probably the next few days will be an official listing of what foods that pistachios have in them

Soon, there'll be no food left on the shelves for us to buy. How many darned years have we been eating the whole range of nuts, without problems? It's becoming ludicrous, to say the least. What I'd like to know is how do nuts suddenly start to intake something which causes salmonella? Has the world gone mad? I shall take no notice of such scaremongery. We have always been told that nuts are good for us, in all sorts of ways but, it seems everything is being denied us of late, and I'll bet we live a darned sight longer than the scientists that come up with these stupid, so-called health facts.
Brightes Blessings.

I know there are a lot of health benefits to a lot of nuts, such as almonds and walnuts, so now I'm wondering if we'll be hearing about recalls on them soon

Yes, Brazil nuts are good for us too. A lot of nuts are actually, in the same way fruits are. I shan't take too much notice my friend. If we're that eager for peanut butter, it's easily made, and I'm sure there will still be supplies of nuts in the health food shops and such.

I also have refrained from buying anything with peanuts since the scare about them. Now these other ones and I love these. I just buy them to eat as a snack. Oh well not now. Thank you for letting us know.

I've been thinking the same thing since you told me about the last one. I was thinking now which one can I eat or can I eat anymore? I afraid to even try any. I thought about pecans. I can get them from down home. My son can send them to me. What do you think? There are tons of pecan trees there.

I don't know what's going on..I think they're just trying to scare people, last year they had a recall on tomatoes too remember? Well I've started eating peanut butter again, so far I'm still here, haven't gotten sick or anything, I don't eat too many nuts, so I won't be worried about the pistachios. I don't think this is the last time we'll hear about contamination either, they'll find something else to recall.

The FDA has been seriously underfunded for a long time. It was an accident waiting ro happen...and it has. What we are not being told is where these contaminated nuts are going. Is it to animal feed? Hopefully they will not end up in the pet food industry.

I think that probably the major brands are diligent in the quality of their products. I don't have a lot of faith in the bargain brands. Especially since none of my pets will eat the stuff. I hope the nuts aren't sold overseas. About the only thing it's good for is fertilizer. Don't you ever wonder where the recalled products go? I remember years ago recalled infant formula going overseas. That was terrible.
