It is official now I have no choice |

It is official now I have move,
I moved into this place in 2005, then in December 2007 it was sold. I can't keep the back yard up, I can hardly move being disabled. The new landlord was a real jerk, and to make a long story short we have been looking for a place cheaper all winter. Now it is rent renewal time and he wants a hundred dollars more a month. He is also selling the place. I could fight it but I don't want to be here anymore, and I will be out come what may by July.
I froze to death for 3 winters here and I was plagued by fleas most of the time. The landlord wouldn't do a thing.
Would you move if the landlord was going to put your rent up by 100.00 or would you stay and fight, please note I am not asking you what I should do I have made my decision, this question is what would you do if your landlord raised you by a hundred dollars.

1. ZephyrSun (3506) | 10 months ago | In my area a landlord has to justify that huge of a rent increase if a tenant complains or files a motion in court. If they could justify it and the courts sided with them than I would move. When I was in property management I hated increasing people's rent and only did so when taxes, insurance or other expenses went up. And, I never raised anyone without atleast a 30 day notice and it was never very much $10-20.

2. tyc415 (4493) | 10 months ago | I really do hope you find something better soon. The way things are where you are at now the landlord should be lowering the rent by at least a hundred instead of raising it. If that was me and the landlord was that way I would for sure get out of there, the faster the better.

whiteheather39 (13448) | 10 months ago | If I had to exist for 3 winters without heat I would have been long gone. I would never pay more to live any place that was unsatisfactory to begin with.

7. kprofgames (1451) | 10 months ago | I would fight with myself over this that's for sure. I know there are tenant rights and such and if a person is freezing in the winter and dealing with fleas I would question the rent increase. I think it would all come down to money really. Could I afford to move. I'd have to out weight putting down the deposits again and reconnect fees for phone, utilities extra.
I feel that I would probably move, look at this as a push come to shove instance where I wasn't exactly happy there to begin with and if the place were going to keep changing hands then I would look for another place that was better cared for and cleaner. I think that a place that has a little higher rent is worth it if I have a better peace of mind when I live there.

9. mentalward (4363) | 10 months ago | Personally, I'd move. My mother and step-father rented apartments in their nearly 25 years together. They only moved twice, once when they were first married, then again about 12 years later. Their rent was raised over $100.00 one year but, compared to what they were already paying, it wasn't a big percentage as they were already paying over $1,000.00 a month.
I would never rent a place for that much! As a matter of fact, the reason I bought my first house was because I was sick of renting and paying off my landlord's mortgage. I thought I would be much better off by paying my OWN mortgage... I was right.
I paid far less by owning a home than I ever did renting. I got a special mortgage for first-time home buyers and only paid a 7% mortgage loan rate. (It's even less today.) All I needed was $500.00 as a down-payment. There are programs here in the U.S. to help first-time home buyers get into their first homes that are very reasonable. I bet there are plans in Canada that are very similar. Paying mortgage payments each month is so much cheaper than paying rent! Plus, each payment gives you more equity instead of giving your landlord more equity.
Good luck in finding a better place and moving! I know it's a tough job... believe me, I know! I've moved about a dozen times in my life.
