Hi I wont bore you with the details but my Son is in England and his American Wife is well in America.
They have been separated for 5 years now. They have no family, houses or shared belonging.
Does anyone know how much a divorce costs and whether it would be best to start the divorce in England or America. They are on friendly terms and no hassle so really it would be just about how long it takes and how much.
Has anyone been in this situation and could give guidance please?

not sure, dose this have to start in the contry were they were married in. its a shame that it has to come to this but if thats what they both what maybe they can work together to find the best deal. just like a house you need to shop around for the best price.

thank you. They were married in Canada which only adds to the complication

According to U.S. divorce law, divorce procedings can be initiated in the county your son's wife lives in and she can even do it herself without a lawyer since there is nothing in dispute. There should be information online for her county, including the forms she will need, or she can go to the Clerk's office at the courthouse. The paperwork can be sent to your son or to a process server in England, who will serve him with the papers. He can respond his agreement or not respond at all and the divorce will be granted by default. I handled my own divorce and it's really not that complicated when both parties are in the same country. Your son's wife could also talk to an attorney to find out if it would be standard procedures or if there is something additional because it's international but her first consultation with the lawyer will not cost her anything.
