The dispute over North Korea's rocket...do you think Japan will shoot it down? |
| |
| Japan recently deployed its missile defense system and moved some of its Maritime Self-Defense Force's warships to strategic locations in preparation for the possibility of shooting down a North Korean rocket scheduled to be launched sometime between April 4 and April 8, which is expected to cross Northern Japanese territory. Japan's official statement, by Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada, is that it will only shoot down the rocket if something goes wrong and the rocket itself or debris threatens Japanese territory. He then goes on to say that any missile or rocket flying over Japan is unacceptable, and adds Japan will take approriate measures with anything that affects the nation's interests. Hamada's comments followed a meeting of Japan's Security Council Friday, at which senior officials voted to approve the use of missile defense technology to destroy any part of the North Korean rocket that looks like it will land on Japan. U.S. Navy ships capable of shooting down ballistic missiles have also been moved to the Sea of Japan, according to a Navy spokesman. So, what's your opinion? Japan, the United States and South Korea are very opposed to a successful launch of this rocket but Japan is taking an extremely strong stance considering it's pacifist constitution. Do you think they'll shoot the rocket down if it makes it off the launch pad and into their territory? | | | | | |

| | North Korea claims the rocket is a test for a space rocket, they say there is a satellite attached. Japan has announced it will not shoot down the missile unless it poses a "direct threat". The missile will fly over Japan at an altitude of around 400-600 miles. China shot down a satellite at that altitude, but I think it would be hard for Japan to shoot down this missile at that speed and altitude. | | | | | | |

| | I have my doubts that the thing will even get off the launch pad...their last one didn't make it very far before it exploded. I believe that Japan is mostly concerned about it becoming an out of control missile headed for their territory but they are standing ready. | | | |

| | I agree with you 100%. I suspect that Japan...and the U.S. and South Korea...don't want this thing to fly, even if it can, which is why U.S. warships are out there, too. If North Korea can create intercontinental ballistic capabilities they can hit a number of targets with one equipped with a nuclear warhead. | | | |

| | Fortunately, so far, they have not managed to stick a warhead on the rockets. I am sure that soon they will get that technology from Iran and Russian though. Shalom | | | |
