1: A tentative assumption made in order to draw out and test it's logical and empirical consequences.

I have never really understood the need of a hypothesis in the scientific method. I understand it's purpose. It gives reason and a goal to study and experimentation, but a purpose is not a need. And I don't see a place for assumption in science. The same with consensus. Consensus is not science. Science is [supposed to be] truth, Not just what is currently popular. Science should begin with observable evidence, not assumption. Hypothesis injects bias into the heart of science. It gives the experimenter "something to prove". This can lead to selective reasoning, ignoring or even suppressing relevant facts. Or Political Correctness for the sake of getting funding. Too many times I have read of scientists who have fudged the facts to get continued funding for a project.

Now let me say that I am not someone who believes that scientists are high priests or Oracles of Knowledge. They are people just like the rest of us. They have biases. they make mistakes. And while most of them are decent honest people that are content to carry out their work in labs around the world, many will do and say whatever is necessary to get what they want, be it funding, fortune or fame. Unfortunately these are the ones we most often hear about.

I recently watched a program on PBS called "Judgment Day". A program about the Evolution/Intelligent Design Trial in Dover,Kansas a few years ago. One line from the court room re-enactment really stood out for me. The actor portraying Dr. Ken Miller said "It could be true, but it certainly wouldn't be science." It could be true, but it certainly wouldn't be science?? Forgive my ignorance but I thought that science was all about finding the truth. Even determining the truth.

Evolutionists rarely debate Intelligent Design(ID) on the basis of truth. They always try to focus on the fact that it doesn't fit their definition of science. But this definition begins with a huge assumption. That everything can be proved naturally. I'd like to see the evidence for that. You cannot empirically say that there is no GOD. Or that there is nothing outside of the natural world that can affect ours. If you start with that assumption then you will look at evidence with a bias. You may throw out evidence that doesn't fit your paradigm and even confuse Cause with Effect.

The church is guilty of the same thing. Many people wonder how there can be so many denominations that all read the same book. It's not because of what they believe. Most Denominations have a lot in common. It's what they choose to ignore that separates them. In order to remain a good Catholic you pretty much have to ignore the third chapter of the Book of John. All religions have these quirks. All people have Bias. Be they religious or scientific.

Does a discussion always have to begin with a question?

myLot reputation of 98/100. savypat (7540)   ranked 513 out of 4,881 in debating  8 months ago

The dictionary I have says a discussion is an act or instance of discussing: consideration or examination by argument, comment, etc: informal debate inquiry, examination: So maybe a question is not necessary.

the assumption is the scientific term, nothing is more than an assumption until it has been proven so until science proves something everything is an assumption,

how to they prove or disprove anything they do it by empirical study.

how do they study by experiments and basically measuring results

what is the principal that the scientific model goes by,

the nul hypothesis, an hypothesis is an idea or thought and yes there is a need in science

take for example a scientist needs to find a cure for cancer.

he may have a hypothesis that a certain drug will cure a certain time of cancer, this is his idea, his thought at this point in time but until the experiments and research is done it is only a thought, an idea that a certain drug will work,

now he takes his hypothesis and tests it against the nul hypothesis, of science,

the nul hypothesis in layman's terms basically says that the researchers hypothesis will not work,

why would somebody what to have a nul hypothesis, that is to avoid damage, and hurt a lot of people or things,

like take for example the same idea this scientist has about the drug and there is no nul hypothesis, that drug can go out on the market, as a cancer drug and if it really isn't many more people will die.

with the nul hypothesis that starts off by saying that the drug does not work in the first place,

the scientist must test the drug against the nul hypothesis (done by statistics) after all his experiments are in and then his findings must prove the nul hypothesis is wrong, if he cannot prove the nul hypothesis is wrong his drug is no good, like the nul hypothesis says.

If he does prove the nul hypothesis wrong and we have a drug that actually works to cure a certain kind of cancer then voila we have a medical breakthrough,

then the drug goes through several more phases of research and study before it is approved for use on the market. It is a very long process, and is so long so that people do not get hurt or die from this new drug.

These drugs can pass through all the stages with flying colours or can be shut down at any part of the stages if the researches find that the drug does not work as expected or actually causes damage.

I have studied and done these research hypotheses in university when I was doing my psychology degrees.

winterose, I am sorry but I don't have a clue what you are talking about here. Without proper punctuation it's hard to decipher your post. It seems that you are trying to tell me what a Hypothesis is, but I assure you, I already know.

myLot reputation of 92/100. winterose (17605)   ranked 460 out of 4,881 in debating  8 months ago

my apology I thought you didn't.

Well if you know then disregard my whole discussion, no problem there.

I think that's nicely put and easy to understand. Nul hypotheses also provide a challenge to the individual by making them confront their own biases.

It occurs to me that to criticise your punctuation is to wilfully ignore what you are trying to communicate. Trouble is the 'hostile reader' has a defence mechanism which is activated when faced with a concept they must think deeply about. In other words do some thinking for themselves. I seem to remember it was called 'reaction formation' or something. Distraction ploys heh heh

So the assumption I made when reading it was 'Winterrose' didn't understand her subject - my nul hypthesis - upon reading carefully I found my nul hypothesis was wrong:) lol

I believe in most of what you are saying, but, not everything. To me science has always been mostly theories that have not yet been proven, for the most part. Also, there is bias in EVERYTHING. There is just no way you can get away from it. That would be an impossible task.
