| | I have the habit of directly writing my compositions instead of using a draft or notepad and thus make me liable in committing some grammatical errors. Not much errors on spelling though. My common mistakes normally have something to do with the use of "to","for","with", "at" and "in" (i.e. talk with or talk to?!) . I must admit that this is my weakness in grammar. I also commit some errors on subject-verb agreement although these errors are somewhat corrected right away as soon as I reread my composition. | | | | | | |

| | Hi bubble Same here. I never read through the draft and publish directly. That makes me vulnerable to typos and mistakes. I am guilty and am trying to make it up. Thanks. | | | |

| | Mimpi dear! There is also this standard mistake in the use of participle of 'have seen 'being replaced by 'have see' and the like.Incidentally, 'while 'affect' is the correct usage in standard English I also read that'effect' is the American usage. It is accepted.Similarly we have the differences in spelling-- 'practice'-noun Practise-verb, but once again American English uses 'c' for both.I am not sure about'advice' being used interchangeably in American English. To exchange an intersting titbit, this word'loose'apart from the spelling has another connotation.THe post may get too long.Tell me if you would like to know this and I shall write it. | | | | | | |

| | lie, lay, lain, lay, laid --the best explanation is is Wren And Martin --I swear by this. Then there is the standard confusion between'raise and rise','diary and dairy'. And of course we have umpteen misconceptions in the use of articles because people tend to go by the spelling and not the phonetic sound. And here also there seems to be a lot of confusion. | | | |

| | True mimpi, the teachers in our schools and colleges definitely taught us this and recently I was surprised to see a list of words where this'effect' was said to be American'affect'.I saw a big list of words,'Standard English and'American ' English and this was among the list;I was surprised. Similarly the use of'c' was also mentioned. One thing that I have realised is that apart from misconceptions, people nowadays tend to repeat wrong usages so much that they make it a common thing and passit on so much thta wrong usages become the 'generally heard'.eg This is how they use the words'continue' and'confirm' in our regional language [Surprisingly I have seen it on T.V. too]--anyhow, as our pm said once ,we Indians would tend to drop an article here and add one there at will. | | | |

| | How strange it can get Kala! Even I have been noticing the metamorphoses of various regional languages as in Media and also not to forget the language of English. Dictionary, itself has evolved so much with the inclusion of newer 'hinglish' (I hate this word!) words. And just as you I am perplexed as to the future of the language. The children today are upto all wrong spellings and interpretations. They are a confused lot today with a jammed English from UK and US. And sadly so! | | | |

| | We also have 'Tanglish'[Tamil+English] words and God help our future generations--only recently I was discussing about this at home. And I cannot understand why they should not use the pure colloquial form of Tamil in these channels[no one is asking for the absolutely pure as was seen in ancient movies]the colloquial informal form is how we talk - It is disgustingly affected on T.V. at times. | | | |

| | Same here. The horrible metamorphosis of my regional language makes me frowm at times. The media reaches out to mass with little wisdom and care. The kids are imitating the, Don't they have a role to play? | | | |

| | Hi! Mimpi! LOL! You are on the dot, we keep making such silly mistakes and I do it many times though inadvertently. Some more to your list could be - using weak for week, sea for see, be for bee, ascent for assent, advice for advise, alternative for aleternate, break for brake, buy for bye, cite for site, currant for current and dose for doze, dual for duel, extant for extent, forth for fourth, herd for heard and mourning for morning. Hopefully, others will add few more such examples. Very Good Post! | | | | | | |

| | Incidentally,I have not dirsectly answered the question and I went on to my chatty style as usual.I try not to make silly mistakesin grammar; --spellings--normally I am decent and I also try to be proper regarding the usage by reading through what I have written because it makes me feel guilty ;but sometimes in a chatty mood I write spoken English instead of formal English ; regarding typos, I do not fret too much ,nowadays, if in my hurry to post the discussion,I tend to overlook some . Punctuation--I try to be comprehensible but I do get carried away at times. | | | | | | |
