I don't remember how much it was when I passed my test in the early '80's,but I can remember petrol going through the £1 a Gallon mark, and then the changeover from Gallons to litres and the changes at the pumps when the price per litre went over £1...

I've got you beat, girl. When I got my drivers license gas was a whopping 35 cents per gallon. At that time my grandmother would pull up to a station and tell the attendant, who came out to the car, to pump 5 gallons. When he was finished she would hand him 2.00 and he would bring her the change. Later as the price of gas went up we would ask for 5.00 worth because it was simpler to pay an even amount of money and just get however many gallons that would give us. When the price of gas got so high here this year we reverted back to asking for a certain number of gallons rather than dollars. Gas was so high that 20.00 just didn't buy enough to make it worth stopping at the gas station. Of course, along with the higher price for gas there has been a reduction of service. No more will the attendant come out to your car and pump your gas, check your oil, and clean your windshield. You have to do all that yourself and even pay for the gas before they will let you pump it. And this is progress?

I will have had my license for 8 years in september. When I got my license gas was $1.49. I wish it was still a buck something! :( I highly doubt ever seeing anything below $1.60 ever again.

I remember that gas cost around a dollar a gallon when I got my license. I also had a very little car with a little tank. When I was 18 years old, i moved from Pennsylvania to Florida. I drove my little car. I remember that I had to fill up my car so many times, and I was so frustrated that I was spending so much money on gas. I kept thinking how I cannot afford to pay this much money for gas. Now I look back and laugh at that story because I think the most I paid for a full tank of gas was 12 dollars! I would love it if 12 dollars would fill up my gas tank now. I guess you don't know how good things are till they are gone!
