I was wondering whether some of you singers have the same problem as I do. I sing classical and sacred and unlike popular we do not use a microphone so we have to make sure that the whole audience can hear me. But no matter what I do, I cannot get the ones at the back to hear me. I have tried raising my voice but to me it sounds like I am shout singing. The nearest vocal coach here or voice teacher is either downtown about ten miles or about 2 or 3 miles away, too far to walk and not far enough for the bus and our bus fares are quite high, not counting the lessons.
And I never went to University - where they do have singing courses.
So what do you classical singers do to get volume? Is it to do with raising the soft palette and how can you tell if they can hear you?

I would seriously ask about putting speakers up and a small microphone so that you and others son't have to strain your voices so hard just so that the back row cannot hear.

Oh, I hadn't thought of it that way. Well, I hope you can find a way to be able to strengthen your vocals so they can be heard farther in to the back row.

That would not make it classical or sacred singing. In classical and sacred, you let your voice carry the volume not the microphone. I do not have a teacher who can tell me how loud I am and what I need to do to make it better. All I know is to breathe from the diaphram, be able to hold your breath, project your voice, raise the soft palette but how high

Not good at belting since I am a soprano and in classical and sacred, you do not belt.

I'm sorry I don't know anything about singing. You must have a very big church if they can't hear you in the back! Is this during a solo? I've heard that "projecting" is a technique that can be learned and has something to do with the diaphragm and breathing exercises can help. You might look up some lessons on the internet. They wouldn't be like a "real" voice coach but might help.

I am taking online lessons, but with my husband having a stroke and me taking care of him, I have not been doing much practice. The church is not that big. If it were, then I would understand.
