A writer for the NY Times wrote about Liberal and Conservative giving. He started out to prove that Liberals care about people and are willing to support those who help he poor. What he found was that Liberals tend to support the organizations that provide things the like, such as the Opera, Concerts, Theaters Art Galleries and the performing arts. He also found that conservatives tend to support their church, organizations that provide direct aid to people. In the last campaign Senator McCain was criticized for giving money to his foundation. Part of the money was donated to his children's schools to his wife's favorite charities Project Smile, and supporting other local relief organizations. Senator McCain largest contribution was to his Alma Mater the US Naval Academy to support a program that taught Ethics in the Military. there was some critizisum until President Obama released his Taxes. Until he decided to run for public office there was almost no giving and over the years his two larges contributions were to Rev Wrights Church and to the Congressional Black Caucus (for political Activities). Senator Bidden donated less that $3000 over the years. Gov Palin and her husband donated close to 15% to various groups and she donated more that Obama and Bidden combined yet she was the poorest person running in the election.
One supporter of President Obama did say that he liked to donate his time rather than money and make appearances but could not name any that he was not paid for his time. With this school auction he could have done something big. President Clinton donated a round of golf with the president. Two magazines that you signed sounds like Dad I need something for the auction as his children are running out the door so you quick sign a copy and stick it in their backpack. We recently had a Educational Foundation Charity Dinner and they auctioned off a large bock of Nothing an got $750 for it. If he wanted to do something how about the magazines with an invitation to the White House for Dinner with the Obama's or a weekend with the Obama's at Camp David for parents and children.
To me this shows that he does not walk the talk unless he is getting something out of it. Lets help the downtrodden Union workers and give them the company(which is not his to give) which gets him votes.

The way I see it right now is, President Obama is only out to help a select group and does not care about everyone in America. He needs to put his money were his mouth is, or like they say put up or shut up. As far as charity goes it might be a good thing that he doesn't give a lot, because he'd probably raise out taxes for that to.
