To domain or not to domain. That is the question.

Ever since I have been spending so much time on the net I keep getting these emails about getting a domain. According to the net you need to get yours before they are all gone. Now I'm hearing about .ws verses .com. They are saying that all the big companies are getting a .ws domain. Frankly I'm confused. Most of the businesses that are commercial based that I see are .com. Other organizations use different listings like .gov for government and .edu for education so why haven't I seen any of these .ws groups? Do you have a domain? If so what do you use it for?

I had a .ws domain before...thing is, you could actually earn from it. Its like a networking thing...my classmate back in college was into this and boy...he was earning a lot! He was able to buy a car and stuff, and imagine he was still in college.

Personally, I really didn't earn...because your actually required to pay something. So I stopped. But my classmates and some of my professors actually earn from that. He earns like 500,000 pesos a month. And that's A LOT.

From the one I'm looking at it says it will cost ten dollars a month to host your website but that is supposed to be the total cost. I don't know though I have never had any luck with multilevel marketing before.

Oh, i guess they didn't change the fee then. I didn't want to pay something back then and just not have time for it. Know what I mean? Its a sure paying site...but I didn't go through it because I wouldn't have time...and it'll be just a waste.

I want a domain but i have no clue what I would use it for I might one day when I have a website worth inflicting on the world. If I was to go for one it would be a dot.com or even better an dot ie but to get an ie here you have to be registered as a business and they do cost a lot more.

I can see why coke or Yahoo would need a domain but I don't see how having one for the average person would be any great help. I was suspicious of the claims that you could make so much money by having one and the more I read here the more I think my suspicions were right.

Yes the big business would need a domain. If a baseness does not have a website these day, they are lost. A lot of people think they will get rich off a website with a one man operation, but that rarely happens and it it does I say good luck to them. I think the likes of me would just have a domain for personal use and fun, if I ever get round to it.

I don't think we have to have a domain. They are just saying that if you choose a domain name, it may have already been taken. The .com, .net, .gov, etc., will never be all used up. It is the name that is in front of it that may be used.

I really thought that there predictions of running out of domains was a little silly because after all they are just made up names. How can you run out of something you just make up?

yup i have a .tk domain and it's for free. i use it for my personal website and for my blog site. .com domain looks more or can give your site more professional look and therefore increase its credibility. there a re cheap domains (.com) out there around 10 $ per year. just search and you'll find one :D

Domain registration does not mean you HAVE a website, it just means you have a named address for your site... you still need a host. Many hosts though bundle domain registration with their service.

That's the thing. I really don't have any idea what would suit me or if I really need a domain at all. That's why I started this discussion. I figured I would get everybody's opinion and then sort it all out. Thanks for your input.

heyy!! actually to domain is good cause you can get rid of those long urls because of the subdomains, and you can choose your own domain, so yea its wayyy better, i haven't checked the .ws thingy. but if you wanna get a domain, you can try .tk it's absolutely free or you can use .co.nr :) too many to choose from
