How many pics can you take with your digital camera before batteries run out?

I have a Nikon Coolpix camera, and am getting really fed up with how quickly the batteries run out. I can take maybe 10 photos before I get the warning 'batteries exhausted'. It's a shame because it takes good pictures. I have looked on the Nikon website to try and find the explanation, but it says that I should be able to take about 250 photos! I think I'm going to have to save up for a different camera. How many pics can you take? Any explanations or suggestions for a good inexpensive camera would be appreciated.

not more than 200 pictures to be take and then the battery will run out. But if i will always check the results of the pictures every shots then it might be more lesser than 200 pictures.

I usually use my Sony CyberShot DSC-W120 for daily photograph. I don't know exactly how many picture i can take before the battery runs out of power. But based on my experience, one day i have taken more than 200 pictures and the battery still remained a bar. I think it's a pretty good battery lifetime. But i didn't take the picture in a row. I stopped it several times for doing another thing, and on that mode i turned the digital camera power off. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.
