What potatoes are the best for making French Fries?

I tried to make French Fries in our fryer a while back, and pretty much all I got were something that looked like hash browns. I've been told that I was using the wrong potato. Can someone tell me what potato I should be using? I know there are several kinds out there.

Did you cut them too small? Everyone I know uses those Idaho baking potatoes. I don't know if I have ever known them by any special name but new potatoes (the little red ones) are definitely not the ones I would choose for that.
