I love bonsais but find they are too expensive to buy when fully established. Can I grow my own from scratch? Is there any special plants that have to be planted or can you use any type of plant? I am looking forward to see what answers you have as I hope I can do it from scratch with time & tlc.

Some plants do better than others when treated this way. There's a good site here with information: http://www.bonsaigardener.org/
He has a newsletter and some recommendations on the types of trees to grow, as well as information on budget bonsai plants. I think growing them would be at least half the fun of having them!

Good luck to your son, I think I may go to my local hardware store or nursery for a nice ceramic pot & some seeds.
