Bonsais - Can I do it?

I love bonsais but find they are too expensive to buy when fully established. Can I grow my own from scratch? Is there any special plants that have to be planted or can you use any type of plant? I am looking forward to see what answers you have as I hope I can do it from scratch with time & tlc.

Some plants do better than others when treated this way. There's a good site here with information: http://www.bonsaigardener.org/ He has a newsletter and some recommendations on the types of trees to grow, as well as information on budget bonsai plants. I think growing them would be at least half the fun of having them!

Of course you can grow and manage your own Bonsai. The real question is how will it look. :) Remember practice makes perfect. Good luck with that. My son wants to give it a go as well.

Good luck to your son, I think I may go to my local hardware store or nursery for a nice ceramic pot & some seeds.
