South Carolina Soverienty Bill bites the dust.  |

|  Well I had such high hopes for my state. We worked really hard on getting this bill passed. But it failed. Why? They debated it and debated it. It got nasty on both sides. A lot of private citizens showed up to lend their support and send notes of support down to their state senators.
Senator Mick Mulvaney(R) said, "This is a no brainer. We're talking about our founding document. How could anyone NOT support the Sovereignty Resolution?"
Brad Hutto(D) Orangeburg, as part of his filibuster, demeaned those who sent him letters, emails and calls regarding the Sovereignty Resolution. Saying they were part of a "cult". And that the bill was a "waste of time".
Sen. John Land, D-Manning said “Is this some kind of a fad or something?I guess South Carolina sometimes likes to do what other states do.”
Sen. Vincent Sheheen, D-Kershaw called the bill a waste of time and said they should just move on to more important issues. One state senator (I can't remember his name but I will try to find it) said "If we are not willing to pass this bill then we need to take the keys to the governor mansion and the state legisture and mail them to washington dc".
And so the bill died a filibuster death. At least for this session. But you can believe that we will bring it back in the next session.
At least they did not play the race card on it like they did last time it was debated.

| |  That is sad! The State Senator is correct in saying just send the keys to the state to Washington D.C. If states are not going to take back there rightful power then there is no need for state government. If the Federal government can dictate to the states what happens inside the state then why have states? If I remember the reason South Caroline went down this road was because Gov. Sanford refuse to take any of Obama's money, and then Obama told Sanford he has too.
This has parallels to an individual not wanting individual right saying that individual rights are a waist of time and we have more important things to do with our life.

| | Ya and Sanford vetoed the budget they turned in a couple of weeks ago because they put bail out money in it. They did not have enough votes to over ride his veto. so the veto of the budget stands. So I guess this was their way of getting back at him and the rest of us.

| |  I've found that when people can't put out honest arguments in an honest debate, that they usually resort to name-calling, which is where this "cult" and "fad" comes from. It happens on both sides of the aisle, not just on one. To those politicians who can't argue honestly, I seriously think they should go back to school and take a few debate classes.

| | What kills me is we had the votes to get it passed. But it never got to make it to a vote. They knew if it made it to a vote it would pass, that is why they filibustered it.

| |  Lil, I really don't know what to think because I don't live in South Carolina and I don't know what brought this all about. Was it because of the stimulus money? I have to say when I saw that about your governor saying he'd pray for the resident who needed an unemployment extension because he'd lost his job due to having to care for ill family members it made me feel really bad. I understand Sanford has Presidential aspirations. He seems to be sending rather mixed messages.

| | I would say yes that is why they filibustered it. Although what the bill has to do with Gov. Sanford I have no idea. He did not write the bill or support it.
To be honest when it was first introduced it got testy in our state legislature then too. We have some elected officials that think the federal gov. should in charge of everything. And some that don't. We had enough votes to pass it. But it got filibustered on the floor before it could come up for a vote.
For some reason some of our reps. took it as a personal attack on Obama. Which it wasn't.
I and others in the state spent a long time on that bill. Helping to get it written and introduced. Then getting other legistlature to co sponsor it. Then to get it out of sub committee on the floor or a vote. It is disheartening to have all the work go down the drain like that on a bill that should be a no brainer. But we will try again in the next session. | | | |
