Backing up data offline? |
|
Hey all! I use Family Tree Ledgends for my work. Though it does offer a recovery online, I no longer want to upload a copy online (long story).... is there a way to back up all my information so if my pc ever bit the dust I'd still have all the information?
thanks all!

1. aidenw (475) | 8 months ago | i use an external hard drive to copy all my important files. it costs about $100 but it's worth buying especially if you have valuable stuff on your pc. i had to learn it the hard way. we get a lot of thunderstorms where i live and we often lose power during a thunderstorm. it's bad when you have your pc on at that time. once or twice it can take it, but more often than that it will 'bite the dust' like you said and it happened to me once. it cost me over $300 to replace the hard drive, not to mention the lost of data. the technician suggested that i get a battery backup and an external hard drive. i did that and they have saved my life.

3SnuggleBunnies (3524) | 8 months ago | I think I have an external hard drive I'm not sure if that's what it is it's about the size of a VHS tape. Or do you mean something like one of those memory stick things you plug in & take with you?

aidenw (475) | 8 months ago | yes the external hard drive is about the size of a vhs tape. it has plenty of space. the other one you mentioned that you just stick to the computer has very limited space and is only good to store a few files usually to be transported somewhere else like to a different computer. so that can't be used for backup purposes. even a cd is not big enough if you have a lot of large files.

2. dragon54u (9768) | 8 months ago | I copy everything important onto cd's. I also have a boot disc in case of emergency. You could also have an external hard drive to keep things on. Just update everything once a week and you'll be fine.
