I really don't get it if people make such a fuss about gaypeople... I mean it's love.. so what's wrong about that? I really think people should show more respect to eachother. I think you'd better don't listen to what they say and be proud of yourself, and you should be happy about the fact you have a relation. maybe you can talk with your grandmother and ask her why she calls you these things?

With your grandmother using the f##gg##t term it shows her age, thus there is this saying it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks. This is not an excuse for her but it is definately the reason.

People talk crap today it is about you and tomorrow it may be about your brother who is having an affair with someone ) example) The way I think about things is hey if they are talking about me at least they are leaving someone else alone.

Be proud of who you are and do not let anyone stand in your way of happiness.

I am so sorry you have to deal with that. I don't know what I would do if I was in your situation. I can understand how you feel though. No one deserves to be treated like that.
Many older people still have an old way of thinking, whether about race, sexual orientation, etc. It is hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I don't mean your grandmother is a dog; it is just an expression. Just more that they are often set in their thinking and it is hard to change it, though not impossible.

Being older and raised a certain way does not make it right though. You deserve respect!!! Her calling you that is not going to change who you are attracted to. You could confront your family and tell them that calling you that is offensive and it hurts you. Though, I know that it is hard to confront people like that.

I guess lucky for me, my immediate family and my gf's family are very open minded; especially her grandmother. Some of my extended family have an issue with it,,but it is their issue. They don't invite me to their gatherings until the last minute and only because they have been poked by other family members to do so. I just let it roll off my back and make other plans before they ask. I wouldn't want to be in an uncomfortable situation any ways.

If you have a family member calling you names behind your back confront them, ask them why they call you those names. Confront them in front of the rest of the family. If they don't want to be honest with you about their name calling and how they feel, then you should not subject yourself to them. I am surprised your brother or other family members have not stood up and said something.

Since you family does not seem very supportive of you it sounds like a good idea to distance yourself from them. But you may want to make a declaration of why you are not going to be there. Let them know the things they say about you are wrong and also what right do they have to put you down or talk about what you do in your personal life? They don't know anything and it sounds like they don't want to get to know you, as you are.

I know some people say you can't choose your family but you can certainly choose to limit your time with them so they don't drag you down with them. I hope your bf's family is more understanding and accepting of you and your relationship.

Since you aren't going to be with your family for July 4th do something you are going to enjoy. Take a trip to a place like ProvinceTown, MA or somewhere were you know you are accepted for who you are.

it's your choice and you have to stand the consequences. the acceptance won't happen overnight.just don't do things that will degrade the name of your family.as long you're doing right things and do better then i guess it wouldn't hard for them to accept the new you.
