Movie Review: Seven Pounds |
| |
| I recently completed the movie Seven Pounds. To begin with, I am not a fan of the movie. I do not condone the way he plan things, but the story was beautifully written. This movie is SLOW. And trust me, when I say this movie is slow, I really mean it is SLOW! Took me a good three days to finish watching this 2 hour movie. Well, let's begin with the review. The movie begins with Will Smith making a 911 call to report a death. His own death. Then the movies shifts to recall mode. Showing the events that happen prior to his call to the 911 center. You see a man in pain. An awful lot of pain. And you are keep wondering, why is this man who calls himself Ben Thomas (Will Smith) in so much pain. A detailed synopsis can be found at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0814314/synopsis Then you realize that he is actually actively seeking out people to help. He helped his brother by giving him a lung. He helped a social working by giving her part of his liver. He helped a baseball coach by giving him one of his kidneys. He helped a cancer stricken boy by giving him his bone marrow. He helped a woman in an abusive relationship by giving her a fresh start. Finally, his last two acts of charity, he gave his corneas to a blind man and his heart to a woman with a heart condition. All this, to atone for the 7 people that died in an accident that he caused when he was driving and not paying attention to the road. 7 people, 6 people in a family and his wife. I personally feel that this movie over glorified suicide. Not something that I condone with. Personally I feel, he was given another chance to live. And he lived it good. But he could not get over the loss of his wife. And he chose to give up that chance to living by giving a chance to seven other people. A way to make atonement for his mistake that took 7 lives. I say this movie was beautifully written because, from the beginning to nearing the end of the movie, you are left hanging. Always wondering why this man is feeling so much pain. And what pain is he feeling that is motivating him to go out and help so many people but not himself. Many loose ends was tied up at the end of the movie when he finally decided it was time to kill himself in order to complete his plans. How he manages to plan his suicide so that his death can benefit others is very well thought out. Again, if you are a fan of slow movies, this is just the kind of movie for you! His motives are well-intentioned. But again, it is a movie that over glorified suicide. Something that I do not exactly feel comfortable about. But overall, a good movie to watch. Slow, but worth watching if you can sit through the boring build up to the finale. | | Seven Pounds | | | | |

| | I didn't find it slow or boring at all. It was beautifully written; very deep. I actually enjoyed it. I wouldn't have done what he did, but he had his reasons. I think the guilt was overwhelming and he couldn't get past it, not so much that he couldn't get over the loss of his wife. Maybe at first it was that way but once he found that girl, the one who needed the heart, he genuinely fell in love with her. I believe it was his love for her that finalized his decision to commit suicide because she had absolutely no other chance to live, she was dying and there was no hope of a compatable heart for her. I found it sad yet touching at the same time. It was much deeper than atonement and guilt and missing his wife, it went beyond that once he met the girl. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, the noble suicide is not something I think should be glorified either. Life is precious, and even though his motives were sincere, I'm not comfortable with the idea of taking of one's own life no matter the reasons. | | | |

| | I really didn't like the movie because to sum it all up, it's about a guy that's so upset about a car accident he caused that he killed himself! Very morbid. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, it is a movie about a guy who planned his suicide. The one thing I like about this movie is, he decided to make his last leg in life a meaningful one. One where he can help others rather than just wallow in self pity and let everything go just like that. I do not fully agree with the theme. But it is a nice movie in the end. | | | |

| | Yeah, the trailer is do different from the movie story line. Like I said, if you like slow movies, then this one is for you. The pace is really slow. And the build up to the ending is quite boring, actually. But the ending was beautiful. Given that he is committing suicide, and this movie glorifying suicide, I do not really agree with the theme. But the movie is worth a watch if you can sit thru the slow pace. | | | |

| | I loved Will Smith in the movie.. but I didn't like the fact that from the beginning I knew how was going to end I prefer movies in which it keeps me wondering what it't next.. | | | | | | |

| | Then this movie is definitely not for you. Cos the movie begins with the end, and then flashes back to the events that led to that beginning (of the movie). But I did mention that the story was very nicely written such that everything tied together very beautifully by the end of the movie. | | | |

| | Actually, I enjoyed this movie alot. I agree with you it was well, written, there was the opening scene, that I did think they could have done differently, but all in all it was done tastefully, and nice. You realize his pain and what he is trying to do, pretty quickly, at least for me. I would recomend this film. | | | | | | |

| | I have seen it as well, and although it is not exactly my favorite kind of movie, I ended watching in one setting. Like you I don't condone suicide even in a glorified way as you call it, but the story was well told and one can in a way sympathize with what he is going trough and how he is making is decisions. Do I agree with the decisions? Not necessarily, but I still can appreciate the movie even though like you I find it kind of slow and touching a subject that can be uncomfortable. | | | | | | |

| | Thank goodness Will Smith has jumped onto the societal issue of text messaging while driving. People, don't do it. An hour and forty five minutes is not enough time for this cause. Personally, I wanted to throw away my cell phone after the movie. I was glad to see other people in the theater saw the message and dumped their phones with the empty bags of popcorn. I decided to disable all text messaging on my phone and would encourage others to do the same. If you care about your family, make them watch this vital Public Service Announcement on text messaging while driving or they could kill seven people. Thanks for showing us the way. | | | | | | |
