There was a dog in the library!!  email this discussion to a friend?

I am absolutely terrified of dogs! I was bit by one when I was real small, so I've had this horrible fear of them ever since. I'd have to know a dog very well in order to ever get near it without fear, and even then I won't touch it or get friendly with it. This is why I own cats.

Well, Saturday we went to the library to pick out some books and videos. Inside the library is this very large dog. It seems the dog belonged to the girl working there that day. She tried to keep him close, but the dog wasn't listening well. He wasn't hyper or anything, but he wanted to sniff us and check us out. I was very uneasy about it, and so were my kids, they have picked up on my fear and have become afraid of dogs themselves.

I suppose this situation wouldn't matter at all if I weren't afraid of dogs, but I didn't like the fact that the dog was there. Last I knew, animals were not allowed in public places unless they were service animals, and they had to be clearly marked as such. This dog was not a service dog at all, he was just a pet.

Do you know of someone who brings their pet into buildings even though they aren't allowed? Have you ever seen a pet inside a business where it shouldn't have been? What would you do if there was a pet in your library that made you feel uneasy?

If it was a Service Dog it had to be trained.

It wasn't a service dog... I explained that in the post. It was the librarian's pet. It wasn't marked as a service dog and it wasn't trained at all.

Ok, I understand I didn't read it all, That is weird the dog shouldn't of been there in the first place I would've complained to the superviors what if the dog would of bit one f the Childen? They would of been in a whole lot of trouble, don't ou think?

I just e-mailed the county library director. I hope something is done about it. I'm still quite upset. You're right, that dog could have hurt someone.

I think the person working there clearly broke some ordinances for sure. Dogs are not allowed in public places usually, unless they are marked as pet friendly. I love dogs and cats. Cats are my favorite really... but I can't have one where I live. If I were afraid of dogs, as you are.. I would definitely say something to someone in charge. I'd call the mayor if I had to. I know folks who are very afraid of dogs, and most have had traumatic experiences that demonize all dogs, no matter how friendly they are.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I don't think the dog should have been there.

I worked in a daycare that was in a nursing home. There was a woman who always brought her dog in when she visited her relative. It was a mean little yappy thing. It didn't really bother me though because i don't mind dogs. The nursing home made a thing then that pets were allowed because they thought it would improve the mood of the residents. So there were people coming in with dogs alot.

I would have had to stop going.

I actually wrote a discussion about this sort of thing a few years back. I PM'd the link to you so you can read it, if you'd like. You might just get a kick out of it.LOL

To answer your discussion, this is one of my pet peeves. I used to think that pets (other than service dogs), weren't allowed in business establishments. But apparently if there isn't a sign outside their door stating otherwise people can bring their pets in. Heck, sometimes they even sneak them in.

I feel for you. My oldest son, who is autistic, is absolutely terrified of dogs (other than the ones we have). It doesn't matter if they are big or small, he is scared of them and flips out every time he sees them inside a store.

I know some people want like to treat the pets as family and that's great and all. But a pet is still a pet and should not be allowed inside of business establishments (with the exception of service dogs). Sorry to sound like a fuddy-duddy, but it just isn't right.

You're right, it isn't right. They wouldn't want me bringing my 3 cats into all these places, so they sure enough should not be bringing a dog! I am not scared of small dogs, but I still get upset whenever I see one in a store that they don't belong.
