Am I the only one? |
|
Now that it's getting warmer out I'm hearing a lot about air conditioning. I guess the majority of people have central air.
Am I the only one who doesn't have a/c?
Right now I don't even so much as have a room air conditioner. I used to... but it was old and it didn't survive the move (because I left it sitting on the porch in the snow for a few weeks!)
Who else does not have air conditioning and just deals with the heat, and places fans strategically?
What do you think when you hear people complaining how their a/c has died and they had to live a day or two in the heat? Sometimes those stories annoy me... especially the year I was pregnant in the summer (that baby turns 3 today!!). Another pregnant woman complained that her a/c died and she had to survive the weekend without it. Needless to say between being miserable, 9 months pregnant, extremely overheated, and hormonal... I was quite annoyed at her!! LOL

1. thyst07 (1068) | 7 months ago | I'm with you! I do not have air conditioning, and I don't even want it. ACs are a huge drain on electricity, and I try to keep my utilities low. Plus, I tend to get cold really easily. When I lived with my grandparents, I had to wear sweaters during the summer because they had their AC on so high. I still take a sweater or jacket with me when I go shopping or out to eat, because most stores and restaurants are just too cold with the AC on. And it is annoying when people complain about how they just can't possibly survive without the air conditioning, because the human race survived without AC for thousands of years.

katsmeow1213 (4928) | 7 months ago | I actually prefer it cold, I hate the heat!! But I know I'd abuse my a/c if I had it, I'd use it way too much, so it's good that I don't have one right now. I'm enjoying my cheap electric bills this summer!

2. meandmy3 (1328) | 7 months ago | Where do you live, State I mean, or region. I am in Atlanta and I have it here, when I lived in down town Chicago I did not have it the first summer, but the second I got a window unit for my bedroom, I have a hard time sleeping when I am hot.
I can understand your frustration when you are without it all the time and then someone who loses it for a day complains.

katsmeow1213 (4928) | 7 months ago | I'm in NY... not the city, central state. We get really cold winters, and rather hot summers. July and August can be in the 90's with a lot of humidity too. Yesterday was only 70 but it was ridiculously humid.
We'll work on getting a room a/c eventually, probably once the weather does get up in the 90's and doesn't get any cooler at night. But for right now I can think of dozens of other things to spend the money on.

meandmy3 (1328) | 7 months ago | I can understand that. Maybe you will get lucky and the temperatures will not get that high this summer. We have already reached the 100 degree mark, today with the heat index it was 110. NICE...
it is the kind of heat that you are either in a pool somewhere or inside somewhere. It is miserable Plus it can be dangerous for everyone, overheating and heat strokes etc can happen so easily.
Again lets hope the heat stays away from your area for some time.

katsmeow1213 (4928) | 7 months ago | We had a few 90 degree days a month ago, lately all we've had is rain until today it was finally sunny again, and mid-70's, but breezy. Almost perfect.

| 123beckie (2) | 7 months ago | I live here in southern California and most of the people I know have air in there homes. I only run mine after 5:00 p.m. then it keeps the house cool all the next day . I have a hard time sleeping and I could not sleep when I am hot. We get temperture's of over 100 degrees here in the summer time. I can understand your frustration when you are without it all of the time. Get ceiling fan's they help a lot with air circulation in a room

3. hairypits (212) | 7 months ago | I'm in the Uk and although it does get pretty hot these days in the summer, we make do with fans. Straight out of the shower dripping to in front of the fan normally works!!

katsmeow1213 (4928) | 7 months ago | The worst was when I first moved in with hubby, he was staying in a garage guest house with no windows!! We'd go down to the lake every single day... that made the evening so much more bearable!

4. lelin1123 (4677) | 7 months ago | People are spoiled when they complain about the heat with no a/c. I grew up without A/C. My parents never had A/C in New York. They moved to Massachuettes the same thing no A/C. When I first had A/C it was in my house it was only one each in the two bedrooms. Now I live in New Mexico and have central air. To be honest though I prefer no A/C at all. I get to cold with the A/C. Has for my parents they are now in Florda with the central Air and my mom is constantly lowering the temp while my dad keeps raising it. The way to survive without A/C is to keep blinds or curtains closed during the day when sun can come in. Happy Birthday to your son. My granddaughter is 3. They are so adorable at this age. Enjoy and Good luck to you and your family!

katsmeow1213 (4928) | 7 months ago | I had central air in one place I lived before, and it did get too cold, I could never find a happy medium. I was changing the temp every couple minutes! But I did miss it when I moved out.

5. dozhou (316) | 7 months ago | I have air conditioning, but I'd rather not use it. Air conditioning could give you a cool room temperature, but it also means some kind of contamination. Admit or not, the side effect is very serious. If you could live without it, forget it.

9. spangles94 (438) | 7 months ago | we dont have air conditioning either, and we live in TX, but even though we have 5 window units in the shed we wont use them, since it costs so much to run them, and for some reason if im in A/C for more than an hour i will get sick, im used to the heat i guess and I think its a good thing for the kids to get used to as well so they wont go insane when times get hard LOL
only problem we have now is tho its in the 100 and its all dry heat so the fan is just blowing hot air on us but it is ice to have the windows and doors open and hear the sounds of nature during the day:)

10. goldeneagle (3633) | 7 months ago | I have had to do without A/C for a few weeks at a time on several occasions. One time I remember was when I was living at home with my parents. The A/C died during the middle of the summer. It wasn't that bad actually, because the house has lots of windows and we had fans everywhere.
Another time was after Hurricane Ivan hit Pensacola, Florida. We were without power where I lived for two weeks. The only source of power we had was a generator, and we used it to run the important things like the freezers and refrigerators, and we used them to run a couple of small lamps at night. The days were the worst, but the nights were a little cooler, because it was September when it hit, and the nights had started to cool down a little.
The last time I was without A/C for any significant time was the result of another hurricane. Hurricane Dennis hit Pensacola in mid-July. We were without power for a couple of weeks. It was TERRIBLE. The nights were not a welcome relief from the days at all.
