If you have - what are your opinions on the ideas set forth in the book? If not, have you heard of it...and when are you going to read it? lol

Here is a link to a wall street journal article on the book:

Hi, Debrak!
I had to read this in high school, and I loved it. However, I didn't like the greed and cynicism of the author's philosophy. In fact, I think that was a strong influence on my quest for altruism and helping others before myself. Still, it's an amazing book. Each year, there's a contest for rather a lot of money for high school kids to write critiques and reviews, but few are willing to attempt such a long and difficult book.

myLot reputation of 82/100. debrakcarey (1351)   ranked 4 out of 29 in atlas shrugged  6 months ago

I have not read the book, but it was highly recommended to me by others. I understand it is about economics and capitalism. Not knowing exactly what the book says..I don't know if it is full of greed and cynicism. I do know that the movtivation of capitalists is to gain more, and make more. The economy dies when you take away the motivation to gain. If I didn't get a pay check...would I go to work? I also know, I cannot help others if I have to constantly be struggling to stay alive and help myself. So capitalism enables those who are altruistic to practice charity.

I definately will find a way to get this book and read it. Thanks for your input.

Greetings, Debra, in the name of the Most High, Who loves His children and will never forsake them,

Once again, you have demonstrated how important a scholarly approach is to issues which conservative Christians must face. We must have facts down as Ayn Rand did prior to writing the book. She had come from the Soviet Union, and saw first hand what the effects of a government-run economy. You are a most valuable asset to our rapidly increasing community. I would suggest that you look me up on www.facebook/danmatheny1.com I just set it up, so if it doesn't go through, I'm probably being detained in a concentration camp. Just kidding. The internet is a tangled web we have weaved.

That's a book I'll have to read. The synopsis by the WSJ seems about as fair and balanced as any out there. Before I paste this quote, it is the authorship of Stephen Moore writing for the Wall Street Journal:

"For the uninitiated, the moral of the story is simply this: Politicians invariably respond to crises -- that in most cases they themselves created -- by spawning new government programs, laws and regulations. These, in turn, generate more havoc and poverty, which inspires the politicians to create more programs . . . and the downward spiral repeats itself until the productive sectors of the economy collapse under the collective weight of taxes and other burdens imposed in the name of fairness, equality and do-goodism."

Very succint work, Steve. I haven't read the book, but if I knew nothing else, it would be from this small paragraph. Where have we seen the proposal to enact fairness? Let's try the Civil Rights Act, for one. Yes, 1964 was a very good year for lawyers, beauracrats, and lobbyists. Did it help the black population? Let's see. Hmm... Well, academic scores were higher. The standard of living was higher. The divorce rate was lower. There were fewer babies born out of wedlock. Church and charitable donations were higher. There was far less crime. But, by gosh, now they was a class all by themselves. Ya know, things ain't the same as they was then... Somehow.

Ah! Equality. I've got two cats in this household. One runs from me everytime he sees me, but sleeps on the bed with my wife or daughter. His name is Licky. The other, my big Siamese with the big blue eyes, usually sleeps with me, when he's not out all night terrorizing the neighborhood. I don't know Licky all that well, except that he seems scared of men. Sky, my cat, is only scared of not getting let outside or his faucet in the tub turned on - just slightly, the way he likes it. For the life of me, however, I don't if they are in any way, shape, or form - EQUAL. Is my Hispanic friend - my current best friend - Ignacio, or Nacho, or Nach, whatever - equal to my former best friend up in Missouri Gene, a second generation Dane? Again, I am stumped. Nach does better with women, and Gene did better with money, and about everything else. But in God's eyes, are they equal? It seems to me that the whole notion is like a value statement - like 2+2=4, which is certainly true, but can we really put living organisms on one side of the equation or other. Only if they are properly tagged and numbered.

Finally, we have the do-gooders. When will we ever learn that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. They only had our best in mind, they say. They say that everything would be more prosperous, more peaceful, and we would be protecting our freedom. Our blessed freedom... In the name of freedom we have slaughtered hundreds of innocents, and of course, paid for doing so with our own lives and as always, our taxes. Another good word that has been turned around on its head: rights. People have a right to good health care, and even though we built the greatest health care system in the world - to which citizens of other countries flock - we are told that it must fixed because people have a right to good health care. They ought to exercise that right on a more frequent basis by exercising and eating whole foods, instead of this junk they call nutrition - or "Nutri-Systems". Oh, I've never tried it, but anything that is prepackaged, IMHO, isn't going to get it for me. If I have to raise and butcher the cow myself, I'm going to start eating better. And I'm healthy! Poor sout that has to eat TV dinners because he never learned how to cook. Right to good health care, my skinny butt.

All the other talk of rights is exactly the same: there is no right to free speech. That is a limitation on Congressional abiity to pass laws regarding speech, or writings, or any form of expression. That admendment was adopted because since the Church of England was so involved with the King and his abusive practices, they were seeking to restrict the tendency to power which is gained by controlling communication. And I could go on and on, but I'm blogging too much. I bet it is a great book, and I'll get around to reading it.

Blessings, Dan

The liberals would tell you that we can't legislate morality....and they're right. But...they sure love to tell us what our values SHOULD be. And then bash the conservative right for asking for a return to Judeo-Christian values.

myLot reputation of 76/100. keymandan (741)  6 months ago

It's the old adage: when you are ahead, stay ahead. They're running the show, Debra. I don't if we should call them liberals or atheists. I don't believe in a devil, per se, despite my reference to one. I believe in spirit of evil which seeks to curtail and control this feisty bunch of non-conformists. They want us to get with the program, but the problem is that there is no program other than our subsequent dismissal from the game. We just don't want to give up. In fact, we keep thinking we're going to win in bringing this country back to the fold.

Hail ye! All those who live for justice, righteousness, and truth! Make a way in the wilderness for the Man of God who brings the towers down, and makes the high places low. That makes mercy our banner, and not force. For their god is the god of forces, as my namesake Daniel wrote.

Excellent, excellent post, and I'm glad I got to comment on it. It's time to crack the whip. Get the troops in order, and start marching. The trumpet has blown. Micheal stands up for His people. Victory is ours, as it was from the beginning. Blessings, Dan

As much as I'd like to say that there is hope for returning America to her former glory....I don't see it happening. Those that run the show now...got there because American Christians gave up their birthright. Calling evil good and good evil...we've given up any right to call ourselves a Christian nation.

I do believe we are seeing the beginning of the end.

myLot reputation of 76/100. keymandan (741)  6 months ago

The devil has but a short time. That's why Obama and his cronies are in such a hurry to get such a flurry of bills past. Have you checked out Americans for Prosperity? Tim Phillips is organizing rallies all over the nation, and utilizing e-mails and the internet to fight fire with fire. It's looks almost fun, and I'll be glad when they get to South Texas. But, they are rallying against all of these socialist bills which are being passed.

I admire those who can do such things. My 'calling' lol I feel, is to get people to wake up to the idea that there is a NEED to fight back.;)

myLot reputation of 76/100. keymandan (741)  6 months ago

My first stop will be the San Antonio Tea Party. Food, fun, and lots of rowdy talk. And some of the famous ACORN people will be there to check out who all is there, and to faithfully report back to Homeland Security. ACORN, as I understand it, is an agency of the Feds that are doing a census, like the Census Bureau, but invading privacy right and left. We're already beyond the point of needing to fight back - we have to fight back. It's either fight back, or find ourselves way, way up a creek in terms of individual liberties.

The way to fight back is not with violence, but education as to what has taken place in the last few decades since the "revolution" of the sixties. We did not just suddenly become a non-Christian nation, a police state, and essentially communist. We did not just suddenly find ourselves ruled by an ogliarchy with Obama as the "new messiah", Pelosi and Reid and a hoarde of people in the administration hailing him. This was planned and orchestrated by an elite group of families, more or less, that intend on remaining in power - even if it means, which it will - the destruction of the very country where they got so stinking rich. Once Americans wake up - and they are waking up - to the insidious nature of the shadow government, then they will find the means to fight back, and there are many.

To name but a few: websites, chat, twitter, cell phone conversations, strikes, misinformation for the government, tax avoidance, hidden assets, etc. When it comes to resisting a tyrannical form of government, there is nobody on this planet better than ordinary Americans. Freedom is simply too ingrained in our history and our culture to allow a government to take our choices away. We have a choice, and in this case, it is to resist government interference in our lives, in our businesses, and in our faith.

So, are we just doomed? Will we have to go hide in the mountains and stock up on food and medicine just to live? What a horrible thing for my grandbabies...to live under tyranny or live as an animal in a cave.

myLot reputation of 76/100. keymandan (741)  6 months ago

Dear Debra,

You are looking at the telescope through the wrong end. The point is not to make things smaller but bigger. It is in every little thing we do and say that we make changes for the better. Of course, a turnaround of any kind is never easy. It's going to be a long, hard fight to bring this country back to its former glory as the most upstanding, morally correct, and self-evaluating nation on earth. That fight is against the users and the abusers. The users have robbed us, by their very incessant need to serve themselves. We all seek to serve ourselves, and that's OK. But, some people just don't know when to stop. They don't have self-imposed limitations, they don't know when enough is enough, and they don't restrain themselves when things are clearly not going right. Keep those printing presses running, until this "problem" goes away. Those are the users.

The abusers, on the other hand, go way beyond merely costing us because they have to have their stuff, whatever it is. They seek to profit from the trade itself in human flesh. For with every hit of crack, or every fix of heroin, or every pill taken to "calm my nerves", we die slowly but surely. The abusers are not those who take illegal drugs, or legal drugs in excess - it is those who use this obvious need to their advantage. Like Steppenwolf put it, "Goddam* the pusher man". And in some cases, maybe we die way before our time.

Debra, I want you to comment on my post, "Who or What is the Snake?" Of course, the "abusers" as I call them, translates to what we're experiencing as Christians in the new millineum.

Bless you, and may you be prosperous in everything you put your hand to, Dan

I'm reading it right now, I've only got a few chapters left.
The book is certainly interesting and well written. It's indeed about capitalism and industrialism, but also about a kind of justice. At first I thought that Dagny Taggart (the leading character) was very cold and almost cruel since everything seemed to be about money. After I had read a few chapters, though, I came to see the true meaning of the book and - being an individualist - understood that the views in the book are quite similar to my own.
As stated in the book, I believe that every person doesn't have an obligation to sacrifice herself for someone else. Of course, you can sacrifice yourself if you want to, but you should never be forced to give up something you love for someone you do not love. The book is filled with anti-collectivism, individualism and maybe just a hint of anarchism. Rand's way of writing is also very good, it's filled with colorful depictions and well thought out arguments.
I truly recommend you to read it, although you may get a headache before you've gotten into the "deeper" parts of the book. Nevertheless, it's certainly a well written little gem and one of my favorite books.

I read both Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead probably about 20 years ago. I actually remember The Fountainhead better. I vaguely remember a lot about rewarding creativity and denouncing government (and other) interference. Probably time to go back and re-read them...

That is why I'm interested in them, the times we live in. I read George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984 in high school...and just recently re read them.

myLot reputation of 80/100. Astraea (100)   ranked 28 out of 29 in atlas shrugged  6 months ago

Oh, I love George Orwell. 1984 deserves to be called a master piece, but I think that the Animal Farm is even better, if that's even possible. It's scary how much of 1984 that actually has come true... I believe it's time we did something. The world isn't going to change itself, but demonstrations don't seem to work. Anyone know some other way of changing the society without use of violence? I'm getting paranoid when I'm downtown, cause there's literally cameras EVERYWHERE!

myLot reputation of 82/100. debrakcarey (1351)   ranked 4 out of 29 in atlas shrugged  6 months ago

I do not know how to change the world except one person at a time...I believe that we are in the beginings of the end times. That is a whole 'nother discussion.

If you change yourself and share what you know to be the truth...with those who care to listen...perhaps when it does all come down to the big ultimatum...you will stand without fear.
