How Often Do You Wear Out Shoes?

My everyday shoes do not last a year. Oh they could but they would look terrible and have some tears in them. I do not buy the most expensive but I do not buy really cheap ones either because I walk outside alot as well as wear them in the gym and on the treadmill. So they do stay in good condition for about 5 months.

Yeah, mine are usually good for at least a year too. I think a year or two is pretty good. 12 years is kind of crazy, but I guess it's good for my friend because she is very picky about shoes.

That is pretty good! I've never heard of those shoes, but they must be pretty good. Or else you guys all have a very similar walking pattern.

I would think it was the shoes that matter, except that I've seen people totally wear out the exact same shoes that I buy. I think it is because a lot of people tend to drag their feet in certain spots, while I never do.

Oh I love flip flops. I would actually just go completely barefoot if I could. But they don't seem to appreciate that at work.

How do you know if they're worn out on the inside? For me, as long as they still grip my feet and don't get too wide, I'll still wear them.

I noticed in my new Nike shoes there are inserts that can be replaced (I'm guessing they're replaceable, since they're removable). I've never noticed the inside wearing out on my shoes, but I guess it happens. Maybe I don't realize it though since most of my shoes don't really have arch support.

I've never bought expensive dress shoes. Probably at most I've paid $30 for dress shoes. But I don't have to walk around much at the office. My current pair of office shoes were $9. I've had them for over a year.

But even my tennis shoes are usually only $15. My running shoes were $95, but for walking shoes I'm happy with the cheap stuff. I used to buy $60 tennis shoes and they didn't wear out either, I just didn't find them as comfortable as the cheap ones.

Why would you give worn out shoes to a thrift store? Can they recycle the parts or something?

If I buy shoes and discover shortly after buying them that they are too uncomfortable, I'll give them to a thrift store or more likely give them away on FreeCycle. But my beat up old shoes don't seem to have any purpose.

Well, actually I guess I do save my beat up shoes for something. Whenever I am told I am going to have to work with farm animals doing something disgusting, I will grab one of my old pairs. Then when I'm done with that project, I will just throw away those shoes.

That's a good point. Back in school I probably wore out my shoes faster too. It seemed like by the time a pair was worn out, my feet had grown a size. I usually didn't grow fast enough to be throwing out perfectly good shoes. Except one summer I was practically barefoot all summer and ended up going from a size 5 to an 8. And later my feet kept growing. I actually bought size 11, but my feet never got there, so I donated those eventually.

Oh interesting! I learn something new everyday. I did not know you could re-heel a shoe. I knew you could have new shoes put on some types of dress shoes, but I never even thought about that little heel stub.

I think you're right. My favorite shoes seem to wear out quickly. However, I have shoes that hurt a lot and are rarely worn. Those shoes will last me forever because there is no way they'll ever fall apart just sitting there. But they are too pretty to throw away.
