Some people conside a good extra virgin olive oil like a fine wine. If you buy imported olive oil do you look to see which country it is from and do you have a favourite. I'm biased and believe that Greek olive oil made from the Kalamata region is the best oil and I love to use the oil from my own trees. Do you have a preference?

I never used olive oil. Sunflower oil is wider spread in Romania, from obvious reasons - we can grow the sunflower but not olive trees... People are beginning to use olive oil more and more, as it is said to be much healthier, but I haven't tried it yet (as it costs more). Anyway, if I'll ever buy olive oil, I can only think of buying Greek, Italian and maybe Spanish olive oil, as I believe they are the most available around here.

Hi stvasile, olive oil caught on in a big way in countries which didn't usually use it when all the reports came out about the Mediterranean diet being the best in the world, and the great usage of oil in those areas. It is an expensive oil in other countries and even here 5 kilos costs about 80 euros in the shops, but most people don't need to buy it. Mine costs me nothing as I have trees, so they just need picking and pressing, and if it's a bad year and I run low one of my friends will have some surplus. Most of the olive farmers sell the oil directly to the press and reserve about 150 kilos for the average household to use in one year. My olive oil is delicious as it is,

Hi busky, if you are buying Greek olive oil see if you can find one produced in the Kalamata area, it really is distinctive and will have been produced locally to this area.
