Global Warming and the flat earth! | | I recently had a debate with an old codger regarding the possibility that global warming is somehow a politically motivated hoax designed to help Al Gore. I couldn't believe the things he was saying to belittle the fact that we are destroying our planet and we need to do anything possible to minimize our impact. I am not aqn alarmist, although I'm called one all the time, I just think it would be foolish for the human race to assume the scenario that we are not impacting the atmosphere at all in this particular case. I've heard anti-global warming theorists compared to those who believed the earth was flat.....seems about right to me!

| | 2. LiAXaZu (133) | 7 months ago | global warming has been an issue even before al gore rose to the spotlight with "the inconvenient truth." in fact i was actually thankful that he did that documentary because it helped in educating the people about how we as citizens of the earth can help save our home. we must be aware that this time, this is the only planet that we can live in and if we don't do measures to save it, then there will be nothing left for our kids/grandkids/other kids after that. i also hope that your disbelief in global warming is not influenced by al gore for that matter. because disbelief in al gore is one thing, but disbelieving in global warming is another. it's like turning your back and refusing to see what really is happening. i don't know about al gore or what his agenda is, if ever he does have one. but i want to help save our planet. not just for our sakes, but also for our descendants. try to look around. maybe you will see that our planet needs our help. if only i can conjure captain planet, i will.:)

ringbearer25 (128) | 7 months ago | Re-read my article, I know global warming is real. On the other hand, I do not like Al Gore all that much. He is not my ideal spokesperson for global warming, but, people listen to him for some reason. And, it is all to rare these days for people to listen to anybody else. Global Warming is not a political issue, it's an environmental issue. And, environmentalists are not all Al Gore loving scientists, alot of them aren't even American.
| |
|
|
LiAXaZu (133) | 7 months ago | yeah, you're right. it is an environmental issue. but we don't have to be crazy about al gore, or anybody else for that matter, to listen to what he is saying. if someone is making sense, isn't it more logical to think about what the person is saying rather than think about what he is? and as you said, people listen to him for some reason, whatever that is. even if not everyone is happy with him as a spokesperson, if he in one way or another can actually bring sense to people about global warming, then it's better than none.

ringbearer25 (128) | 6 months ago | Al Gore is crazy himself. He is a double talking politician just like anybody else. He has interests in the petrolium industry. People listen to him, and that's good for global warming. However, most people don't realize he has conflicting interests. And why did he just open his own car factory when the american people just bailed out GM? Why couldn't he buy GM and make them the "Car manufacturer of the future"?
| |
|
|
LiAXaZu (133) | 6 months ago | yeah. but that's how politicians are. let's just hope that more people pay more attention to global warming than thinking that they shouldn't listen because some politician is just using the topic for his own accord.:)

ringbearer25 (128) | 7 months ago | Excellent, well said. All his futile arguments were the exact same lame whiney arguments I used to hear 15 years ago while debating this same topic in college. When there is enough proof to these convince global warming skeptics, it will be far too late. I guess this is why I am sometimes labeled an alarmist. But, notice, I did not say it IS the end, or even it WILL BE the end. Just that if we do nothing, it could bring the end. If this makes me an alrarmist, I'm guilty. I'm just trying to educate people. And for the record, I have been accused of "blindly accepting science as fact" by these simpletons. Wrong again, I question everything, especially science! I believe another hurdle we must overcome to achieve a sustainable society is a merging of science and religion. The must work together in unison, thus complimenting each other and creating a firmer foundation. This is a whole seperate issue though, better just worry about tackling global warming for now. Thanks again for your response.

john_essex (119) | 7 months ago | I agree with your comments about being labelled alarmist. I like think most people who understand the issues of global warming are far from alarmists - in fact we are very positive, because what we are saying is that while there is trouble ahead we can take action now to avert it.
Science is very vigorous and involves lots of peer reviews. By their very nature scientists are very questioning of everything. I have much more confidence in the results of valid real scientists over blokes down the pub or psuedo scientists as often dug up by the anti global warming crowd.

| darkpid (15) | 5 months ago | I am sorry john but global warming is indeed a scam. I'm all for saving the environment but the world is not at stake.
Notice how there is no proof that CO2 is a green-house gas? Guess what is though... water vapor, which is about 50% or more of our air. Should we outlaw water vapor to save the planet that has sustaned water vapor for millions of years?
If you have noticed, people about hundred years ago thought globla warming was coming, aand if that were true we would be dead by now.
The ozone hole is getting smaller, not larger.
Give me proof that the global temperature is increaasing per year, there is no proven reserch.
If it is a global problem, how come other countries aren't helping? They have the technology too.
Man-made pollution is actually less than it ever has been, with our better technology.
Volcanoes make much more pollution than we do, every year. If our littler pollution had any effect, then a few eruptions would have killed us by now.
Why should we pay for carbon, if you're up to date with news you know about this, when paying doesn't stop it from happening? l gore, who proposed global warming, used to own one of the biggest zinc mines ever, which caused major pollution. If we were to pay for carbon, I would lose all hope for the usa.
Co2 is important, we are all made of guess what, carbon. Plants breathe carbon, if we get rid of it the plants will die, causing a chain reaction which WILL lead to the exctinction of the earth's life.
Remember about 7 years ago when the government said we were going into an ice age? what happened to that?
I'm sll for going green but global warming is ridiculous.
well, there is your compelling arguement you desire, feel free to prove me wrong.

john_essex (119) | 5 months ago | Oh dear. You really need to get up to date! There is plenty of proof about global warming. Governments all around the world have accepted it. Barrack Obama is well aware of our need to reduce CO2 output. I'll respond to this one discussion, but that's it because people like you are so blinkered and ignorant that its impossible to have rational discussion. And whats the hole in the ozone layer got to do with it? Do some research on google!
