What kind of mushrooms could these have been.

Last week we had some wonderful grilled mushrooms in a taverna. Around here mushroons do not seem to grow wild and the only ones on sale are button mushrooms which I think are imported. In the taverna they were thick mushrooms, almost meaty, and I would love to know what kind they were but asking of course just brought the response 'mushrooms'. They were big and almost meaty, what variety could they have been.

I thought I knew what they were when you said they were thick mushrooms as I would take a guess at them being Portobello mushrooms as these are large and thick. But then I wondered when you said almost meaty you meant the taste in which case I would say they were most likely shiitake as these are reasonably think and meaty.
