fuel Filter on 1998 Dodge Caravan  email this discussion to a friend?

My van is doing exactly what the book says a dirty or cloged filter causes. I need to know how to find the filter and change it and if I can do it myself.

On most vehicals today locating and changing the fuel filter is easy and the owner can most likely do the job. It is also very important to change the fuel filter. As your fuel filter gets clogged, it makes the fuel pump work harder. As your fuel pump works harder, it wears out sooner. Replacing a modern day in tank fuel filter can run $500 to $800 or even more. So, change that fuel filter!

OK, now to locate it. Look under the rear of your vehical. Find the fuel tank. If necessary you can just follow the fuel intake where you put the nozzle of the gas pump to the fuel tank. Once you find the fuel tank look at the front of the tank, the side facing the front of the vehical. Find the fuel line that goes to the front of the vehical toward the engine. The fuel filter these days is almost always an in line filter. It will usually be about 1 and 1/2 inches to 2 and 1/2 inches in diameter and 3 to 5 inches long. When you think you have found it, take a really good look at it. Memorize what it looks like. Go to the auto parts store and tell them what you want for what model. When they bring you the part, take a good look at it. Is it the same one? If it is, buy the part, go home and switch it out. The instructions I have given you are general instructions for almost any modern vehical and are in fact exactly what I do for my own cars.

" Replacing a modern day in tank fuel filter can run $500 to $800 or even more. "

The words " fuel filter " in the quote here, cut from my orginal post are supposed to be " fuel pump ".
