Good dog but... |
|
Great dog and would never hurt a person even a baby.
Problem is that my dog, sam, keeps jumping on every stranger. I hate it. He is pretty good after awhile but then it feels as if he is forgetting.
Am I missing something? Am I in the beginning phase of teaching sam not to jump on new people?
I'm worried because if a short child one day that walks up to my dog and he greets him by jumping... I don't want sam to be put to sleep.
And idea how to stop a dog from jumping on to people or even the furniture.
Did I do something wrong as it was growing up? Am I a bad parent? Should I have beat the dog?

1. Signal20 (1829) | 5 months ago | The dog needs to be kept on a leash when you know you're going to come into contact with people. Tighten up the leash when he's getting ready to jump up on someone, tell him DOWN in a loud firm voice, then SIT. Once he sits, praise him-good boy/girl, and ask the stranger to carefully bend down to pet him. Make sure you still have control of him, because some dogs will jump right up and smack the person in the head when they lean down to pet the dog. Eventually he should get the idea. Keep a leash by the front door of your house, so when company comes, you can put the leash on him and do the same.

2. flzmlady (321) | 5 months ago | no no dont beat your dog. is he small? then this action is really normal. but if his action become fierce, maybe you should try to throw your arms around him when next time he wants to jump on somebody and say "sit " to him.i think you must control his jumping when meeting strangers, but not to beat him. i dont think he will understand if you beat him for this. hpe your dog become more docile and get rid of this habbit.

doggyhouz (478) | 5 months ago | It is a medium size dog, im not totally sure about the breed. But it is almost 2 years old now and i'm worried that when it goes out it gets over excited.

| 3. Rafayel (41) | 5 months ago | We use to have a dog like that who jumped on people all the time. Every time we did we shouted, 'no teddy, no' and 'bad dog teddy', The dogs name was Teddy. He found it very difficult to refrain from doing this, so for a while, every time we had guests, he was put on a leash. He eventualy got out of it, and greeted ppl normally for around 2-3 years, then he went missing and we couldn't find him:(

| 4. thisistif (25) | 4 months ago | My dog is similar to yours. I still have my dog and it still jumps. Apparently I missed the age where I can stop him from jumping. But I've heard from others that it is never to late to teach them not to do that same with biting as well.
But I guess I just wasn't ready to have a dog when I first got it. But when I have time now it seems to be a lot harder since the dog became more free spirited and I guess it thinks it is like me. Where I walk and do whatever I want.
